I saw this mention in the comments thread of a recent Larry Lynch YouTube video.

If you now look at the FAQs for ordering of the Ford F-150 lightning, it states the following.

If my preferred vehicle configuration is not available, can I hold my place in line for a later MY vehicle?

"No, once invited to order, you will have the availability to select any of the current models available. You can also cancel your reservation and receive a deposit refund at any time."

Based on this, it seems like current reservation holders are really going to be screwed over and that they can't wait for their trim to be available in future model years.

If that's the case, Ford is really handling this terribly by making it nearly impossible for even early reservation holders to get the lower level trims they were seeking.

That is one way to clear the backlog of reservations...poor move on Ford's part...seems like they are looking to make some headlines around the number of outstanding reservations going down and also be able to open up reservations sooner with a lower reservation to order conversion rate. Probably makes sense from a business standpoint but dose leave those with early reservations out in the cold if they were looking for one of the lower trims

A hundred bucks isn't really skin in the game. Ford needs to clear the backlog and get back to a normal course of business. Here's what is available. Take it or leave it. I get it.

Totally agree, the right business decision for Ford but I feel for the people who are going to be left without a truck or reservation...Its business and this is what happens when you have a product in such high demand. Probably really important for Ford to clear the backlog before the Silverado EV comes out, then they will have a leg up on the competition from a supply standpoint

...those ordering a Lariat or Platinum won't care, but those with a Pro or XLT mindset will likely not like the outcome when they do finally receive the invite to Order... I've you've waited all this time to find out that your trim is already sold out, and you can't 'wait' another 12, 18, or 24 months, you will be without one of these, maybe forever. Sadly, when you cancel, it just leaves more for the next person, etc. I'm not a fan of this line of order planning from Ford, although I do get that they have to, in some way, limit the amount of 'hold overs' that just continue to pile up, and up, etc.

I wish there was a better way.

Seems like a "s**t or get off the pot" move.

Ford is wallowing on it's own imagined hype and the momentary lack of inventories across the industry.

They would soon realize that customers have a way of getting even.
Huh? 😐

That part does suck if you want that specifically and can't get it. However the flip side to this is that Ford is one of the few to not do a top trim first model for releasing. For Rivian I would want the dual motor rather than the quad. Same with Chevy, Cybertruck, etc. I reserved the dual motor CT and it was scheduled for after the tri-motor. Now I'm wondering if they'll even bother with the dual motor.

I think ford has realized that there are a lot of people who aren’t really serious about ordering and want to keep the order as a backup order. From what I know you can still order all the trims but the pro will be estimated to arrive a autumn of 2023 and a xlt early next year. I saw a recent survey that shows a good number of reservation holders were not serious about ordering.

I and I think many others would be willing to put more skin in the game in the terms of a larger deposit if it meant locking in the ability to order a base level trim or even better lock in the prices. Ford made headlines and was game changing when they sold a $40000 EV pickup truck but unfortunately that was available to likely only under 1000 individuals in practice. Those first movers and the ones who made reservations early on shouldn't be forced to buy a $60K or likely $75K trim if they don't want to lose their reservation.

I'm not sure if anyone can know 'who' is in the first 10,000 reservations, or not... supposition, yes, but facts, no. Ford is not going to give out that information, either. SO MANY reserved on the first day, that there's always going to be guessing about who is 'next' in line, or rather, who 'should' be next in line, if you are simply using time stamps as a method - FORD doesn't, though.

You must be inside the meeting room of Tesla or sleeping with Elon Musk to be able to know and say this.o_O

The truth is nobody knows for sure and everything out there is speculation.

My son worked for Tesla and I can't extract any inside info from him -- even probably if I threaten to disinherit him.

Yes but taking 5 seconds to type it out and move on also doesn't mean much either. I never understood the argument because a person isn't in a board room taking a stab at what might happen is somehow a waste of time.

For the most part Ford has communicated the general percentages of each trim and the pro/xlt were always at the low end. of the 200k reservations if a majority want the truck at that level yea there are going to be a lot of disappointed people.

I dont blame ford for the crazy amount of demand they were not prepared for but I can only see one thing they could have done differently (hindsight being 20/20). That this email is trying to rectify.

Reservations should have been taken at trim level - when the trim level runs out, stop taking them.

With respect to the fact that ford is not enforcing a first in line policy to who gets to order first I think its not as easy as just enforcing a first in first out policy. Ford is forced to sell cars through dealerships (its literally the law) and with that come a bunch of BS that is already in place. Ford is literally restructuring their company into EV and non-EV to get around this just for their EV sales in the future and this kind of restructuring is massively expensive. So it's easy to say "I was the first in line!!" (I was a day 2 reservation holder and the dealership i picked has not sold a single one yet) but its more complicated than that.

Once the restructuring is done and Ford is selling these things direct, just watch how smooth it is. it wont be because they got a bunch of feedback, it's because there isn't a bunch of bullsh*t bureaucracy in place they have to follow.

I want the Pro or XLT model. Ford will not let me order it. I'm willing to wait until they can make it. I will put down what ever deposit they want. How is a guaranteed sale worth throwing away? What business sense does that make?

Ford played this one dirty. To get the attention of the EV market they advertised their under 40k truck but they only intended make few of it and push the 80k trucks on people. This makes sense for short term gains but bad business for a big company like ford. They are losing people’s loyalty. If I can’t get a pro or xlt I am out. No more ford !

Naw. It is how the industry works. Nothing new, it is how every company works. If you will not buy from a company that operates that way, then... well... Good luck buying any vehicle. 🫤
