I live in NY and I drive back and forth, 150 miles, between Upstate where it gets really cold and Long Island, where it usually feels mildly cold. I used to cruise at 80 mph on the Thruway but I've cut back in anticipation for getting an EV pickup.

I do a lot of highway driving, on the Thruway back and forth about once a week and also when I'm at either end. Upstate in Shandaken, I go there miles to State Highway rt 28 to get anywhere at 55 to 65 mph. On LI, I go about 5 miles to the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway to get anywhere. So you see, I do almost all my driving at highway speeds, and I'm worried about winter range.

I saw this on Youtube;

And it scared the living beJesus out of me. I do realize that he made things about as bad as possible but that didn't look good at all. And it's only 37 degrees! Most morning Upstate it less than 20 degrees.

My truck won't be in the garage. It will be sitting out in single digit weather very often so I'm concerned about range

So now that Winter is finally here, how are you all finding your range? Also, near the end of the video, he talks about charging a Hummer costing $100 at a commercial charger. How much is it costing you to charge at a public charger?

Thank you!

That Hoovie video is doing exactly what it was made for: sell YouTube revenue. It's not worth watching.

EV experts on why Hoovie's video is flagrantly wrong and may have even been intentionally misleading:

Agreed. At the start of each one he's welcomes you to the dumbest car videos on YouTube. He's right.

I'm in New Jersey and our mornings have been in the 20's the last few weeks. I don't do a lot of highway driving. I've noticed that in the morning prior to the cold weather I was getting about 2.4 mi/kwh driving around town and back roads averaging about 45 mph. Since the cold snap started the efficiency in the morning now is about 2.1-2.2 mi/kwh depending on how cold it is and if a precondition the battery before leaving. So for my SR battery that would still get somewhere around 210 miles on a full charge.

I'm in Southeast PA, so our temps have been colder lately too. I think you'll do fine considering your driving is highway based and relatively flat. I assume you drive 150 miles round trip daily? If your truck is sitting outside, will you be able to plug it in to charge? I think as long as you charge nightly, your truck will do well given your commuting route.

Maybe I missed it, but ER battery or SR? Does this mean 75 miles each way? Or, 300 mile round trips frequently?

If it's the latter, and you don't accept that you will need to fast charge, you may want to re-think your use case. Highway miles are tough. A 300 mile trip in bad weather assuming 1.5 mi/kWh means you're going to need 200 kWh to make the trip. Figure on taking on 100kWh fast charging into the ER battery, need a little more for the SR, for around $31.00-$43.00. (NY State may be different)

If these are just extremes, you'll probably be fine on 150 mile trips, no matter the weather. You know, outside the extreme cases that are coming later this week....

No, I drive 150 miles between houses, I'm retired, about once a week with 95% of that being highway. I know that that guy in the video made it look as bad as possible but I'm still concerned. I don't want to have to stop, but even if it did, the charging infrastucture between Mahwah and Tarrytown, where I'd want to stop is almost non-existent.

I've got to be able to do my route, with a lot of it at 75 mph in order for me to feel comfortable with my truck.

The correct question has been asked....SR or ER? ER you will be fine. Just charge to 100% before leaving.

With an ER pack you should be OK.

Unfortunately for me, going to Extended Range puts the truck out of my price range. The base truck is going to be around $60,000 and that's about all I can spend.

I guess it's just not looking good for me getting this truck.

Yeah, the SR truck is not a good road tripping/freeway option. Not only are the actual on-freeway miles numbers lower than what they initially appear, but it also charges considerably slower than the ER truck when you do get to a DCFC. I know there are people on The forum that will argue otherwise, but it's truth. Ford is making the same mistake with the SR truck that Tesla did with its P60 model S. I expect history to repeat itself, and for the SR to go the way of the P60.

#1 precondition your car and battery. Set a departure time if possible and leave plugged in
#2 time your charging if possible to start like midnight or 1am. Charging keeps the battery warm.

Ultimately, warm battery = better performance. Same for ICE engines. They work better when not battling the elements.

If you are at a spot and can't charge, biggest recommendation is to take the throttle easy until the battery gets warmed up.

My temps have been in single digits and teens and I have managed 2-2.2 for the last few weeks. Waking up and leaving for the day with 276 on to GOM
