There's a ton of price laws in place for Gas stations. We need them duplicated for DC Fast charger EV charging stations. Specifically:

  • Clearly marked price per KWH, on a large sign, like gas stations.
  • Clearly marked total KW delivery
  • Mandate compatible chargers.
  • No price gouging (I.E. no extra fees, or a cap on those fees)

Which stations don't mark the KW delivered? I've only messed with EA and I feel like I always see the total at the end.

I'd push back on mandating only because I don't feel like we reached a "best" place for the type of charging. But then again, I haven't done that much reading up on CCS and if it is the future or just the current hold over.

There are laws stopping gas stations from price gouging?

Chargepoint is the only charging network I have encountered that has variable pricing in the same geographic area. This is because the location owns the charger instead of the network. But the app does give you an estimated price you will pay.

I have found the EA network to be very transparent.

I would rather they mandate things like charger up-time percentages. The non-functioning chargers are a bigger issue to me.

It's not clearly marked as you drive by. (Like gas stations). You're forced to stop and punch a bunch of buttons on the screen to see the price.

Yeah, here in NY we have a bunch of laws dictating what gas stations can upcharge. Every time there's a crisis in the middle east the governor is on TV saying "We'll prosecute any gas stations that try to take advantage of this...."

Yeah, we need a lot more chargers that's for sure. And broken ones are a PITA as well. EVgo I've found is annoyingly pricy, and the property owners definitely add a surcharge.

You could also just check their app or Plug Share.

Imagine having to open an app to figure out how much gas is at the gas station.
I used to do that all the time. I'd consult GasBuddy to decide which way to go to get gas.

These are state laws. I encourage you to reach out to your state representatives to get them interested in putting together such a law. You might check first to see if groups like Plug In America are already drafting such laws. You can make sure NY gets these sorts of laws first.

Making price gouging illegal only hurts the poor.

I am surprised that after "n" years of EV availability a more structured/standards-based plan for charging infratsructure isn't in place already. And while I'm all for cheapp charging, etc., until there is a somewhat standardized model for State-level taxation (yes, I know, but we DO want nice roads to drive on, right), it IS going to be a little like the Wild West.

Just my $0.02

A lot of states charge more to get plates for an EV to make up for the loss in fuel taxes for the roads.
