Vehicle Registration Fees

Friend of mine was complaining about his DMV in another state and it made me curious about ours. I've only ever paid the renewal for a car which is only $135.

The curb weight is under 7000 lbs so we'd just be paying $187 every 2 years? I see there is a section specific to trucks but it has a minimum weight.

I would rather see this as a 'state fee' attached to each and every DC FAST CHARGER and Level 2 chargers. This means that EVERYONE, even EV owners from other states, help pay the road taxes, not just the residents who may actually infrequently ever DC Fast Charge.
I could see people opposing this because it would adversely affect those without garages/driveways. One of the last times I sat at a DCFC one of the people, maybe everyone there, looked like this was part of her routine to stop and charge at a DCFC because she can't at home. Then of course there are L2 chargers out and about that are free.
California now charges higher fees for all EV's, since we're not paying the gas tax. They collect it in registration instead. My 2019 Tesla Model S is around $900 per year. Purchase price was only $86,000 at the time. I expect that $80,000 trucks won't be cheap either.
You have a yearly renewal and it is $900?
