I reserved my Lightning the morning of 5/20/21 and have been excitedly awaiting my turn to reserve (hoping with Wave 3 coming up in September). But, I need help being talked off the ledge :).

I owned an F-150 for a couple years and absolutely loved it (basically my 3rd child). I sold it back in Jan of 2022 when the used car prices were crazy and I anticipated getting to order the Lightning. Since it took so long, I actually went ahead and reserved a Tesla Model 3 Performance and just got it. My original plan was to sell the Tesla when I was going to get my Lightning (I expect EV values to stay high/go up at least through 2023, especially now with the new tax credit).

I need help being talked off the ledge (or to jump) on if I should still move forward with this plan. I've really enjoyed the Model 3, and I'm getting concerned with some things I'm hearing about the Lightning. Tesla truly seems to design their cars for their customers, but Ford is really pissing me off (increasing price past tax credit limit as I want the Lariat, having to use a dealer and the headaches there, etc.). This has me worried if the Lightning will really be worth the $100k price I'm probably going to pay after taxes, fees, etc.

Is this car really worth the price? I absolutely loved my F-150 XLT, but not sure it will make sense to get it now or maybe wait a couple years after Ford splits the EV part of the company out and can go direct-to-consumer.

I can't tell you what to do with your money, and how to handle your emotions, but, as a new owner of a PRO, and 850 miles of camping and travel over the last 6 days, powering my camper while traveling, and charging the PRO while camping... it is EVERYTHING that Ford and @JimFarley said it would be, and MORE... it IS the Model A of it's time, NOW is the time.

It depends on how much you really "want" or "need" it. I'm assuming the Model 3 is a mostly commuter car right now? (btw, Ford increasing their price is no different from Tesla. Didn't they just increase the price of autopilot? a product that still doesn't exist after multiple price increases and year of "development"? and I know that is an option vs standard stuff on the Ford but Tesla does increase prices). Anyway, is it worth the price? you are the only one that can answer that. Do you think any of the other ev truck coming out are going to be cheaper? I love my truck and the price increase gave me pause, if I hadn't already gotten mine, but that's because I was just able to prep for what I just paid for. But I LOVE the truck. I'm glad I got it and I'm not giving it up. Helped move stuff last Friday, went on a road trip this weekend and lining up to help someone move next month and I'm gitty about it.

I just got my lightning two weeks ago. It’s my fourth F150 and I can say it’s the best one I’ve had so far in terms of ride and comfort. The best thing is it’s just like my other F150s other than it’s electric. I looked at a Tesla model Y to replace my wife’s car. I placed an order and then cancelled it after they kept delaying delivery. My impression is Tesla’s are priced like luxury cars but built with a cheap interior. Only you can decide if you want a truck or not. If you want or need a truck, the lightning is only choice right now.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

@FM_Jack, you are correct Tesla raised their prices but it didn't effect me so I don't care lol. My main frustration with Ford raising their prices is that the Lariat ER is now above the tax credit line, which I was really hoping to get.

You all make really good points though and I appreciate your opinions.

One more question, have you had any concerns with the Lightning so far? For example, someone told me that the turning radius on it was not great/worse than the gas F-150s

I have never been too impressed with Tesla’s build quality. I have a M3 now and just got the Lightning Monday. It is awesome to have a truck again after 17 years of stuffing my boards into vehicles I bought to reduce fuel consumption. The price increases on an already expensive truck would give me pause as well. But I didn’t base my purchase on the tax credit and unfortunately I paid more than the current base price of the Lariat ER. As my wife says, just enjoy the truck it’s what you wanted. I didn’t realize how much I missed having a truck until I got mine. If you can swing it I don’t think you’ll regret it.

I’ve had mine for a week. All I can say is the 15 month wait was worth it. Loving everything about this truck.

can't comment on the 'turning radius' versus any other truck since I've not owned another to 'compare' it too, though it seems to work just fine... with reverse being the other option, when needed. It wasn't one of my concerns, but everyone is in a different place when it comes to needs, or worries. This is a large supercrew truck, although it's shorter than others with longer beds, although the wheelbase could be the same.

It really is a fantastic vehicle, but value is in the eye of the beholder. For me, being able to drive a truck as my commuter vehicle and have all the truck features (now with a frunk!) that I use everyday while still being efficient isn't something I would trade. If you are just planning to use it for a commuter and comparing against an SUV, a car, etc. and don't regularly use the truck parts, then it will likely be harder to justify. The price jump and tax credit changes certainly do make the mental math a bit more difficult.

No. It is not. In 24 months prices will be dramatically lower for a better product. Fortunately, there are plenty of us that will pay top dollar to be a beta tester but no, it is absolutely not the best deal for the customer at this time.

So this is the first truck I have had since a Ford Ranger when I was 18 years old. And I paid top dollar and was worried I was a sucker. However, I love this truck (so far). Like really love it. Where else can you rocket 6400 lbs of metal from 0-60 in 4 seconds? And agree with comments on Tesla's just seeming like a bit of a cheap build, especially the interior. Tesla's just seem a bit dainty compared to the Lightning.

That said, value is always in the eye of the beholder -- and $90k is just a lot to pay for Ford. I get it.
