Hey Folks. Wanted to get opinions on replacing the 12v battery in the Frunk with a 12v Lithium Ion battery. Worth the cost to get a battery that is approx 1/2 the weight and has approx 2 to 3 times the battery life of the OEM battery? South Texas where I live is notoriously tough on battery life. Costs I am seeing for a quality 12v Lithium Ion replacement approx $300? Has anyone done this swap? Any thoughts for or against would be appreciated! Thanks, Walt

Quality aftermarket motorcycle batteries such as the ones made by anti-gravity have an internal BMS that will allow a charging system designed for lead acid to properly maintain it. The piece I am not 100% sure about is how the DC to DC converter is going to react to this change. Lithium batteries have far less impedance than a lead acid, so there is the possibility it could confuse the truck's computer.

I think it's worth a test however. It could possibly solve two problems at once. First, the lithium batteries' standing voltage is higher so the truck should never go into a failure mode because of the voltage sag seen in the small lead acid batteries. Secondly, lithium batteries do not mind, actually prefer hanging out at less than 100% charge.

If I were currently driving a Lightning I believe I would give it a shot. Go to anti-gravity's site and find one with the same dimensions as the one you wish to replace.

Very interesting. Thank you for your reply. Had not thought about how this would affect the DC Converter. I would not want to do anything that would confuse the truck's computer. I had read somewhere that failure of the 12v battery in the Frunk could disable the truck. Would love to hear from someone who has actually made this swap. Thanks again for your prompt reply.

Conventional LFP cannot be charged below 0C without risking damage. If you live in anything less than a tropical climate even a self-heating low voltage battery not a good idea.

6S LTO might work.

Do lots of research on these before you attempt a swap.

I think I am going to stay with my OEM 12v Battery. I always have my batteries checked regularly and don't want to risk any complications with a replacement. Thanks for the input! Walt

I was thinking about replacing 12V batt with a Optima deep cell battery when I upgrade my audio system later this summer. I want to first find out if such a battery is compatible with the truck. I think they are regular acid batteries but have larger and deeper lead plates inside.

What about a 12v marine battery? They tend to have a longer draw down period and are built for harsher elements. I’m not sure if there’s any downside or compromise if used in a vehicle though.

I replaced mine with the Ohmmu Lithium battery. I swapped it a week and a half ago and have had no issues as of yet. My main reasons for swapping it were; more power for aftermarket stereo and the extended life span. It only weighs 8 lbs which is a fraction of the factory battery.

@downs08 - Can you post a photo with the battery installed? Model #? How much?

It’s an Ohmmu F1230L, now they have added Bluetooth capabilities and they’re on sale for $413.10. Excuse all the fuses, I have added a RetraxPro Power Tonneau Cover, AAMP power steps, and replaced the factory B&O amplifier with a JL Audio RD900/5 amp.
