Not a troll even though this is my first post, also couldn’t really find a sub forum to put this in as its generic. I have owned a Tesla for over 8 years and over 180K miles on it and overall am quite happy with that car. I have also driven many other makes which have overall been quite solid. This truck however is a completely different story, as a TLDR this thing has no where near the range claimed, the software is absolute trash, blue cruise will very likely kill some folks, build quality for a platinum is bad, strange design decisions everywhere, and the dealer / ford removing options on a loaded truck.

The range this has been brutal, I am getting 1.4 – 1.6 miles per kWh which is giving me 180 miles on a full charge. (Currently have 990 miles on the truck) I am almost exclusively interstate, and above the speed limit which I understand can hurt range but shouldn’t be on the order of + 40% loss. It seems that a lot of folks like to say the ‘guess-o-meter’ isn’t accurate however if that is not the case Ford should fix it instead of having owners tell each other to ignore it. Additionally, the trip meter, planning software is lightyears behind competitor vehicles you cannot make a good prediction on range short of using the map, and seeing the ‘zone’ which you can drive in. On the driving side of things its ok it floats like everyone knows already, and the traction control system is garbage compared to other EV manufactures. When you punch it the tires shouldn’t slip when traction control is on, a huge part of why evs are great is the traction management is unmatched which is missing in the lightning.

The software, omg this might turn into a book sorry for the long read. Let’s start with the ICU or driver display panel whatever its called. In all modes other than calm it is very busy and in the ‘main’ view with the regen / consumption bar it flashes all the time. This is hard to describe but when you let off the accelerator pedal the gauge to the left of the screen becomes like 10% larger, then shrinks then does it again and again. It catches your eye and generally I find it annoying. The display doesn’t show the battery %, indication or the trip efficiency but thank God it has battery and motor temp which everyone needs /s. The truck icon doesn’t match the color of the actual vehicle your driving, the illustration for lane keeping has 3 positions it appears, and it jumps to those positions contributing more to catch your eye for no reason. The positions appear to be Over the line to the left, over the line to the right, and center. Most modern cars this is a smooth transition and shows more context for the road characteristics.

More random thoughts on the ICU, WTF does ‘READY’ in green even mean, no shit the truck is ready its driving. The music information scrolls on the bottom of the display for 2 seconds before disappearing forever. The speedometer with the ‘gear’ look is childish and changes when in cruise control or blue cruise to something that at least looks modern. Also why have a bar that shows 120 MPH when the truck will only do 105? Drop the bar, just put the speed front in center. In blue cruise there is no road context at all for what is happening around the truck, however the entire screen is taken up by what looks like a pointless radar. Also, there is so much blue on the screen its crazy, isn’t blue light bad for your eyes?

The calm screen is equally shitty at conveying anything useful except an abyss of empty space which seems to illustrate ford’s creative ability to a T. Honestly imo ford should just ‘steal’ Tesla’s looks and feel and name the dashboard ‘modern’ see how many folks use it and abandon the shit they have put together to this point. Due to the button lay out on the steering wheel however I think they would have a hard time cloning widgets and such and those buttons can be an entire other discussion. The dashboard should be separated out in 3rds with each side being customizable while driving or parked.

On to the 15” screen with the Knob.. Going to try to do do this a bit different as that wall of text looked brutal. Ford took a screen threw it into a truck, then decided to puke out software that is functionally lacking, has the UI / UX of a 1st year college project, while locking you out of majority of the controls while driving. IMO Ford just like the ICU should create a ‘modern’ software view with a completely different design and functionality approach, and a legacy view with the current trash of a product. Then see which wins out.. Now on to individual things..
The HVAC Controls WTF – Why is there auto 1, 2, and 3 for the love of God just assume when I set a temperature make it that temp. Why is the entire bottom 20% of the screen dedicated to climate, have someone consolidate the controls perhaps? Why is there a permanent AC toggle button that is huge? Why isn’t there an “off” option from the temperature adjustment control that pops up into a huge UI element? Make more efficient use of the space so you can do better shit with the screen. I am sure from all the customer feedback you got to this hacked up design for climate control, but start with a clean sheet of paper and make this not suck.

Heated Seat Controls – In reverse they work as expected, tap the button and it increases to 3, tap again it does to 2, then tap again goes to 1, tap one more time and its off. Now explain this, when driving you get a dumb ass pop up similar to the temperature control pop up. STOP POPPING UP MENU’s EVERYWHERE FFS FORD. The seat controls should work from a tap, not from an adjustment slider. As for cooled seats the controls should work as they work in reverse.. You have the code to make them work in the correct way now implement it everywhere.

Radio / Audio – Ford should have apps such as spotify, pandora, and other streaming services available in the car in conjunction with FM/AM/XM. After having to use android auto, and car play in this truck it is a huge let down to not have something baked into the software stack on the car. So instead of my $100k truck being able to stream shit I now need my Pixel 7 Pro and trust Google not to murder android auto in 4 years when they do their next round of budget cuts.
Ford Needs to provide first party infotainment experiences end of story , I shouldn’t need a phone to drive all the ‘smarts’ of the truck.

Feedback on the radio -- Overall make the eq easier to find it’s a huge pai, drop the little dancing icon that shows music is playing as the eq doesn’t match the actual song or audio which is dumb. The grid with all the stations should be collapsed into something that doesn’t look like a wall of littered icons. Also provide a way to remove the XM icon from the display it looks like a huge ad, and I am not going to listen to that shit anyway. One other note on the platinum the speakers in the headrest do not seem to work even when in ‘surround’ mode which is just a cherry on top for how well put together this truck is from a software and options perspective.

Android Auto / Car Play – I have a pixel 7 pro and it never connects correctly; I get the message android auto failed to connect. Its also slow to connect when it does ill be half a mile down the road listening to music and BAM! Now your listening to Spotify or whatever the phone decided I wanted to listen to which is beyond annoying. We noticed this same janky behavior with a friend Iphone 13. Ford should provide an experience within the truck that makes me not want to connect android auto / car play. I know this might be a hot take but these solutions suck and are a band aid to an industry that failed to make good software to date.
Overall Slowness – Say you want to open the camera app that’s going to take at least 20 seconds. Want to do anything within this UI it going to ignore your touches and then pop up whenever it damn well pleases.

Overall Menu System – Everything is buried behind multiple menu’s once again look at tesla to see how this should be done its really not that hard.

EV Controls – I should be able to set my charge limit withing 2 button presses, not 5.

Ford Pass – I don’t even want to go on about this, but you cannot change the charge level monitor the charging speed via this garbage app. To unlock , lock or start you have to press and hold buttons for 5 seconds why? No ability to set temperature, turn on heated seats vend windows, open sun roof open frunk, tailgate. The pro power zone lights or whatever dumb name they have take a power on press and hold, then a loading screen then another press and hold for each zone then a loading screen. Overall complete trash like most of this trucks software

Bug Reporting – You can report bugs which is super great, however if you choose other wtf does it report? It doesn’t ask for any more information, so I am sure the devs know exactly what to address /s.

Subscription Services – Apparently, I had a subscription service expire on the truck, and I couldn’t even tell you what the subscription provided (not talking about XM). As there is no first party music apps built into the car so why would I pay ford anything for providing literally nothing?

Nagging –
Want to change the seat memory while driving, press the button and get a pop up ‘seat recall not permitted while driving’ , denied..

Get into the truck and want to drive – Pop up ‘want to renter sport mode press ok’ If you don’t drops you into normal. WHY WHY WHY! Don’t fucking change the settings I set leave them alone

Need to type an address while on the interstate or driving – Nope locked out no keyboard.. denied , for all the ‘drive safe’ folks out here get the lost all this makes me do is type on my phone as the voice controls are crap

Want to view the payload while driving pop up unable to perform that action

Keep eyes on road, keep hand on steering wheel after seconds of looking at the ICU for information Pop up after pop up

Blue cruise disengage randomly– no warning lets you promptly leave the lane all without a single beep, or pop up beautiful design ford well done.

Its like I am rolling with HAL 9000, and a team of ford lawyers right next to me every drive. I fucking hate it, everything about the nagging software system in this thing.
End of the day no way the team of engineers that made this software is proud of the work they have done. I hope they come to their senses and change this trash.

Build Quality and Issues – Not going to lie started off on the wrong foot with this truck when Ford removed the max recline seats and gave me a $300 credit on a $10,000 platinum option. Then the dealer told me to get fucked that was a nice touch as well.

The shifting stalk feels like a toy, and frankly should have been on the column or a dial instead of this fold down piece of work that it is. Honestly this is one of those things that if you had a product design meeting and showed management at another company you would be laughed out of a room.

The seat leather in the rear seats is crinkled and looks badly installed dealer said it might fix itself in the future. The sheer amount of plastic is sad for the price. The piano black interior finish has a chip on it when I receive the truck still trying to get that addressed. The driver door makes noise as if it isn’t shut all the way when driving it. The frunk beeping and how damn slow it is frankly is comical. Additionally, when it unlatches makes a hell of a noise.

Overall, I waited 2 years for this truck and what a disappointment it has been. Ford if you read this feel free to reach out to me VIN : G13160

Ahh just thought of another thing.. the damn push to start button axe it with software just make the truck always on.. add pet modes, dashcam software and other things like that. You have a huge battery use the damn thing.

Thanks for the detailed response with your real-world experience. There can be a lot of early adopter cheer leading on new toys and it's good to hear both sides. I'm creeping towards an order date and getting VERY nervous about dropping almost a 100k on a pick up truck with range and other issues. I'm worried I may have been caught up in the hype.

I can say that if I had any faith Ford could fix the software in this thing I might keep it even if the range is way below what I would have expected. I frankly don't understand how everyone is so positive about the truck. I can only speculate the performance in a straight line gets folks really excited at first but once that wears off I think many will be in complete regret mode.

Ill rattle off a few other things I think are an issue...

The DC Fast Charging rate is very slow compared to peers, this needs to be increased over the air.

The charging port feels like its going to break. It would be cool if the after market made a powered one or maybe a magnetic latch instead of the pin? Overall this is a carry over part from gas vehicles as I understand. Think about it, with a gas car how often do you fill up once a week? With an EV you charge daily this will break, and frankly should be redesigned.

Blue cruise as a subscription , i get it great reoccurring revenue model for Ford, but I spent 100k on this truck it should just be included

Blue Cruise performance, spoke about it a little bit but a few more things it does not work over 80. Does not maintain good lane control feels out of control many times. The nagging when using the feature is obnoxious.

The buttons on the wheel feel very cheap, this isnt a lightning thing I guess but the vol up and down buttons already feel mushy to me as if they are wearing out after 900 miles.

The blue cruise cameras that are watching the driver, when the truck is parked at night they will flash IR all night. This leads down a few thoughts.. One it triggers my home security cameras I had to put a privacy mask over the truck area to keep it from sensing motion. And second, since these are on all the time why do i need to push a button to turn 'ON' the truck

When backing up it beeps which you can hear in the cab. This is especially annoying if your backing up a trailer. Imagine backing up a trailer in a tight space under the constant chime of beep... beep.. beep.. beep.. It drives me legit crazy.

The sun roof area when you dont have the shade deployed you can see all the hardware that drives the sunroof. Overall just a fit an finish issue.

The truck will not connect to Wifi networks. It tries and tries then will just fail. This appears to be a ford problem with multiple networks.

Anyway I wish i didnt spend the 101,500 on the truck I did and would strongly suggest others think super hard before buying the product. Maybe wait a couple more years or prey that ford changes their direction. However given the software takes a hostile approach to usability I wouldnt count on a culture change in Ford to remedy this. This truck would be really great at $40k

Last thing, this truck is going to paint a narrative to many anti EV folks EV range sucks. When in this case ford misrepresented the range when in normal use. Ford should have and frankly could have provided the EPA numbers, and then provided their 'ford' numbers so the customers were not in the dark.

funny I love my truck, is it perfect no but haven't owned a vehicle that was. I get some of your points for sure, I hate to say it but this is a ford this is not a McLaren, ya you spent 100k but the battery ate half that cost not the seat controls. Anyways you knew what you were buying, new product GEN1 sorry to be real but that is the case. Sell it if you don't like it! Oh I have not missed stopping in a blizzard to pump gas freezing my yarbells off!

I think its pretty easy to dismiss arguments with claims such as buy a McLaren however it really just side steps the points I made. Going into this I understood it was a first gen product, much like I understood my Telsa Model S in 2014 was a first gen product. This time however I bought a vehicle from a company with 100 years of history behind them and expected more.

I agree it does beat not pumping gas in the winter, which is one of the many benefits of having an EV. I am glad you love your truck, but objectivly speaking short of the general EVness of it which is inherit to every electric vehicle I dont see what there is to love here. The bed maybe?

Look I want to like this thing, and frankly this could be fixed with a software rewrite and design changes that are completely in Fords control and could be done over the air.

As for the battery for ER $35,960 USD, and I am sure Ford left room for a fat profit margin in that price.

well the 100 years came through in the truck because it is a truck we are all used to seeing and using, unlike tesla's abortion called the cyber truck, i know there are those that love the tesla truck and maybe it will be great vehicle but it is not a useful truck to operate a business with is my re3al point. Anyways I respect your opinion and agree Ford can improve but it still is gen 1 in all aspects and those 100 years don't offer much help here, tesla is a decade ahead of any ev.

So how well does it work as a truck? All of your complaints seem to be about software and trim.

I will say the bed functions as well as any other truck I have owned. It holds things and moves them as expected... Short of that not sure what other 'Truck' things it should do. Have any ideas?

Towing it has plenty of power so that is another plus...

I hate the cybertruck, I frankly am not sure what they were thinking with that. As for truck stuff I think it does that stuff ok but not sure how it can be anymore capable or remarkable in that category. It has a bed.. you can do stuff with it and tow. What other 'truck' things should it be doing?

The thing I'll agree on is Ford needs to be up front that range is terrible in the north, particularly at high speed. Maybe publish a cold weather range at different temps would be a great start.

I'm literally banking on nevi or id be walking from my order. Trusting a government program..... well I guess the intestate system worked!

Interstates are awesome, but Ford really needs to communicate realistic range estimates because the '300' mile claim is woefully incorrect.

100 years of innovation to put a box on a fame... Really just think they should fix the software then if that is the case..
fords 100 years had nothing to do with a huge infotainment system, they made a truck with an engine that could tow the snot outta whatever you needed, all kinds of trucks 150, 250, 350, 450, 550 whatever you need, they didn't give much crap about spending time how to make the truck drive down the road while you sleep in the seat, tesla did that and got all the manufacturers thinking they need to do the same it seems. Anyways good luck in the sale!

300 is actually low for summer in town driving. And epa highway is 260ish.....

I just think they need to be clear and break out range by different factors like speed and temperature so folks get a realistic picture.

When backing up it beeps which you can hear in the cab. This is especially annoying if your backing up a trailer. Imagine backing up a trailer in a tight space under the constant chime of beep... beep.. beep.. beep.. It drives me legit crazy.
At least this one can be addressed aftermarket. https://www.megaohmmotorsports.com/products

I agree with the original post. All Ford had to do is copy someone else. Add to the gripes that the map interface also sucks. If you zoom out just a little bit, all of the surface streets disappear. If you’re stuck in traffic and want to find a bypass, you’ll be scrolling forever. The map doesn’t zoom and scroll during navigation. I have to play with it way too much. And I get aggravated every time I have to turn it on or off, and I still forget to lock it even if I remember to turn it off.

Battery % display in normal modes would be cool. Miles since last charge is a must. I keep forgetting to reset the trip odometer every time I charge.

I still don’t understand the Brake Coach - I see 100% energy returned and know that is impossible unless they’ve re-written the rules of physics.

I won’t get off on the charging network because I knew it would be sparse, but I’m really surprised about how scarce it is. I live in an MSA of 3.2 million people and there is one fast charging multi unit location with 8 units, 4 of which were broken when I tried to use it. I know this will get better with time.

I also have a 2016 Tesla S. The 6 year old Tesla kicks this new truck’s a$$ when it comes to the user experience and charging network. I was ready to sell it, but can’t bring myself to give up the Tesla. I’ve been spoiled.

The app is also a distant second, and it’s only second because there are only 2 in the race.
Is my car unlocked or not? I just keep locking it from the App because I can’t tell.

For a truck, it’s a great truck. For an electric vehicle, it missed the mark.

I can deal with the range. I’m in Florida. I love the extra space, and it’s a truck!

I’m keeping it until the Cybertruck comes out. If I can stomach the look of the Cybertruck, I’ll get it when my number is up. If I can’t deal with the Cybertruck look, I’ll be back in a Model S.

There… I feel better now.

I hear you and agree with several of the points that you make about the User Interface. I have the Lariat SR. I don’t regret the purchase and I do remain hopeful that the Ford Administrators look at these postings and find useful feedback because there is definitely room for improvement.

I live in a hilly area in California and typically drive in Sport Mode as it seems to be the best way to maximize the regenerative braking. It annoys me that I have to continually acknowledge (within a few seconds of “starting” the truck) that, yes, I would like to remain in Sport Mode. I agree that it should remain in whatever drive mode I last selected until I select a different Drive Mode.

The heated seats should toggle through the settings: low, medium, high, off with each press of the button. I completely agree with you. The pop up slider bar is not great and actually makes you take your eyes off the road. I don’t care for the slider bar for cabin temperature for the same reason, although you can use the on-screen +/- button to reach the desired setting and you can use the Ford voice assistant to set the cabin temp. I have not been able to use the voice assistant to adjust the heated seats and, frankly, the voice assistant is not particularly easy to command anyway.

And I share your point about the inability to provide specific feedback through the user interface. I tried to provide feedback on the navigation system and was annoyed that when I selected “other” that that was the end of it. I expected to be able to input some text regarding my issue because it fell outside of the provided categories. My navigation system repeatedly nags me to enter the carpool lane on the freeway, even though I don’t yet have the decals that would allow me to drive in the carpool lane as a solo occupant and even though I might not care to use the carpool lane even if I was eligible.

Oh yeah, the Blue Cruise thing. I felt more stress keeping my hands hovering over the steering wheel while watching everything around me. I only tried it a couple of times and for brief durations each time. In all honesty, the freeways here are way too busy for this type of system to function safely. I also wondered what would happen when I passed into an area where Blue Cruise was suddenly not available, but I didn’t experience it personally because a few minutes of that was enough for me. Just like the Sirius radio, Blue Cruise is a subscription that I will not renew.

I enjoy not purchasing or burning gasoline and if you’re looking for a full size truck to commute short distances or drive around town or to and from the home improvement center or as a work truck within a limited geographical area, then this truck is ideal. It’s comfortable and has plenty of power but it’s not a road trip vehicle. I made one trip of 400 miles each direction and at 80+ mph “going with the flow” on Interstate 5 it sucked up kilowatt hours very quickly. I experienced issues with charger availability in the Electrify America network and limited units (generally 4) to begin with at each station. While waiting for my truck to charge at one stop, I took my dog for a walk and passed by a Tesla charging facility with at least 20 (probably closer to 30) chargers all located beneath a solar PV canopy virtually in the middle of nowhere (Panoche Road if anyone’s familiar). Electrify America had 4 units with 2 out of service and the screens on them were nearly unreadable after spending too much time in the sun. The screens on the Electrify America chargers looked as if they had been sandblasted.

Again, I remain hopeful that our collective user input will make it to Ford and that over-the-air updates will come. I understand where your frustration is coming from and wish you the best with your experience, whatever you decide to do.

with over 7,000 miles, I love this machine. I'll never go back to gas, no matter the 'growing pains'...
EV's in general are exceptional, and honestly I never want to go back to gas as well. With that said there are short commings that should not be pushed aside just because its an EV. This is suppose to be the smartest ford truck
