I like the "rapid red". There is a $495 upcharge for the color. This more than covers the whole cost of paint. I know red is a harder color to work with. I've painted a few cars myself.

Anyone know why the upcharge? Is it just that, the material and labor adds that much to it?

Alternatively I'm considering a lighter grey and putting a dark grey stripe along the bottom like many F250s have.

I've always heard that red pigments are the most expensive. Though, I've always ass-u-me d that the upcharges are for multiple coats. That Star White is beautiful.

And like most options, because people are willing to pay for it.
Like me!

And seeing how it pops in the sun on the Out of Spec vids, I'm going to be happy with it.

I don't have any data to support this, but it could be that the colors that are people select more, get a volume discount in the colors, so red being a less purchased paint, along with if there are additional coats required, may be the reason for the high price. Plus they get more margin if they can incentivize more to buy smaller number of colors since they require less service supplies, and less complicity as a whole. It doesn't really have much to do with process unless there are more coats like you said. Again just my thoughts, could be 100% wrong.

There's a lot of metal flake in Rapid Red. That adds to materials cost and difficulty (=time).
