I do not have anywhere else car related to post this but reading a busy mother who went to work and must have had a million things going on in her head left a loved child in the car while she went to school to teach KIDS! I have to say this happens far to often good parents that make huge mistakes like this due to our simple human nature of not being a supercomputer and humans do make mistakes and forget.

Why has no auto manufacturer with this recurring problem not have a sensor for a crying child left in a car that auto rolls all windows down and begins to honk the horn!

I am baffled by this, Really I cannot understand such a simple sensor, seat pressure sensor, audio sensor can simple help eliminate this ! Common auto makers do this!

We need to lobby for this important change!

33 views and nothing, ya this is heavy! but we have to be real in life sometimes and try to make changes when times call for it. Lawyers are most likely to blame here, lawyers have helped society make change in a good way but in something like this they can hamper change in a deadly way to make auto makers fear if their system fails to work as designed, that part is most unfortunate when we all know this can be a simple fix to this issue. Anyways my attempt to save a life as I post this anywhere I can, the issue will become more and more prevalent not less with global warming!

I do believe Tesla has whats called the pet mode, seems pretty easy to just adapt that to include other living beings being detected. It keeps climate controls on and notifies the owner when battery levels get below 20%

wow I did not know that, well leave it to Elon and I have sent this message to his twitter account and tesla twitter this message as I know if anyone in this industry is brave enough to do it he is, as much as I purchased a ford f150 had tesla made a real truck for practical uses I would have bought a tesla, not ford bashing as I own 2 transit vans a f350 lariat diesel and another f350 cutaway so definitely not a ford basher just Elon tends to take the risk which I do understand their is a risk due to my last statement. Anyways my motive is only genuine for the sake of kids and pets for that matter!

yea, different cars have stuff. From what I know in the F150/Ford vehicles there is a rear seat alert but I don't think it does the full amount of bells and whistles you listed.

Your solution however can't be enforced too harshly though. You are talking about a considerable amount of waste to force a small amount of people to be better as the vast majority don't do this. I've never left my kids in the backseat and I never will. The considerable amount of waste would be coming from building more cars with these features, they would cost more, possible restrictions could force more car manufacturers to stop selling here (though I see you are in Canada) in the US.

I was going to put in a very "heavy" line here but I figured it wouldn't be appreciated by the powers that be. But it's very topical and wouldn't directly apply to you since you are in Canada.

Check the manual. The Mustang Mach E has an option of alerting you when you stop, terming you to check the back seat for young passengers. I’ll bet the Lightning does too.

My Mach E lets me know when there is weight on a rear seat when exiting the vehicle and prompts me to check to passengers with an emblem of a child seat on the screen. Lots of vehicles come with similar features. It should be a requirement for new vehicles though if it isn't already, totally agree 👍. Not sure if our new Bronco does it as well, will have to give it a check sometime.

The lightning does the same as the MME….every time you turn off the lightning, it flashes on the screen to check backseat for passengers and makes beeping sounds so you should look before exiting the vehicle.

wow I guess my newest car at the moment is a 2018 (not equipped with these technologies) so it is good to see some moving in this direction. My comments are not directed at parents and why they leave a child or a pet in a car rather no matter the reason that the vehicle can identify this has occurred and honk horn while running ac (which I read tesla does) and when ac ( AC would only be available in all electric vehicle I assume) can no longer run roll all windows down as last effort to prevent this. Well it seems to me to be a relatively cheap and easy engineering to help eliminate these tragedies (no system ever solves all situations)

there's no sensor involved, but my F150 hybrid does tell me to check my back seat every time I turn it off. Has a chime, and a picture of a car seat on the dash screen.

Wife's Hyundai Tuscon has sensors that detect movement in the backseat and will then remind you by phone app and/or honking.

it's out there. carmakers are doing it in modern vehicles.

Hard to regulate pure stupidity...
All humans make mistakes. Some make stupid mistakes that kill innocent, helpless humans. No reason to hate on the innocent victims that their grave mistakes kill. The people who live on, live on in lives of misery and regret. I can suffer through a little nagware if it saves lives.

Unpopular opinion - accountability is important and we are losing some of it in our society - having kids is not an easy thing to do, if you aren’t fit to do it….don’t. I cannot phantom any scenario where I’d leave my dog inside car like EVER….

it’s sad but parents need to be accountable…!
It’s a false equivalency to “hold parents accountable“ when their actions have led to the death of a young, silent, sleeping child who is harness-strapped in a rear facing infant seat. There is no appropriate level of accountability. The child is still dead.

how about jail time? Not fit to procreate = don’t do it…actions have consequences. Forgetting a child inside the car like you are forgetting your keys is not acceptable.

Who said there aren't punishments when this happens?

In addition, (I'm assuming this is in newer Fords - at least) it knows when a seat is occupied. Puts it in your instrument cluster. Gives you a warning there as well.

You know I didn’t really want to start this debate as to the why it happens just that it does happen. Auto makers can help reduce this in cases where it was an accident, stupidity or intentional or however you want to label it but that was never my intention to ask why. I just can not understand why the car cannot do as another posters tesla does by running ac with an occupancy sensor for pets and people and roll windows down and honk when ac can no longer run. That is all I am hoping to see in vehicles (not political just a noble thing to do) as a way to save the suffering of any person or animal that is left in a hot car.

You will find a full discussion of the Rear Occupant Alert System of the Lightning on page 175 of the manual.
