Hi everyone,

My Lightning will be in my hands in a couple days.

I paid my $100 down hours after the initial pricing became available. Due to the early money down, I've been grandfathered in my pricing. I'm getting a PRO that listed for $39,974.00.

The dealer is taking the current window sticker ($51,974) and adding sales tax on the whole amount, then offering "a discount" of $12,000.
I understand that if a manufacturer offers a "instant rebate", that it is taxable. I ordered when the truck was still $39,974.

I live in Wisconsin and my state sales tax is at 5.5%.

Should I be paying sales tax on $40k or $52k?
Can anyone provide a link to proof?

Thanks everyone.

Like you said you understand, in Wisconsin sales tax is calculated at the price before rebates/incentives are applied.

The price protection is a personal rebate tied to your name/info, thus you should be paying tax on any price protection rebate. I’m not sure the full $12k is price protection though if you ordered when price was less (but still more than $39k) then that’s not a rebate and dealer should have price information at that point.

Gratitude 🙏🏻
The current MSRP of a base 2023 Ford Lightning is now $55974.
You are getting one hell of a deal! Your truck doesn’t have the most current window sticker price (there was a 3rd price increase in Dec 2022). Even paying tax on $52k you’re still coming out ahead by a mile! You are essentially talking about $660 in tax savings (40k vs 52k). There are many threads on this forum where dealerships aren’t finding or honoring price protection at all.

The Truth:
The truck was severely underpriced from the beginning. If you know anything about EV’s, the specs don’t add up. 98kWh battery, AWD, LED lighting, pro power, size, etc. There is no EV sold today or when it was introduced with those specs. It was a moonshot expecting Ford would sell me this truck, but they did. I just completed a similar transaction for a Pro and I am grateful to my dealership and to Ford.

I interpret Ford's timely 3rd price increase on the Pro models as a last call for early reservation holders. It seems Pro deliveries have increased greatly in Dec 2022. I wouldn't anticipate more incentives to offset that final $4000 increase. I fully expected my recent Pro sales purchase (built 12/5) to have the current MSRP price, but it didn't. I wonder how many Pro's were built before that 3rd price increase on Dec 14th? Will those built after have the current sticker price? Is Ford going to place a time cap on the current PCO + private cash offer? They seem to want these "Lucky" early reservation holders that ordered in wave 1 (maybe 2) off their books.

I just got my Pro delivered to me on 12/9/22, I was only able to get 7 k private rebate off the Sticker price. The other 5k i had to go through Ford and make a claim and hope i get it in a few months. I did have to pay sales tax on the sticker price and not after the rebate price. Still a great deal and i am extremely happy with the truck.

You must have extended your reservation back in April I’m guessing like the rest of us who get 23 pro for 22 pricing. It really had nothing to do with money you put down. In Ny I had to pay sales tax on the $7000 private offer but not the $5000 MSRP price jump. So with my options it was $50754 ($46974 plus options) that I was taxed

It doesn’t matter when they were built it matters when you ordered. The price is set at order date

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Berm,
I could have been clearer, my questions were more based on:
When I put my $100 down, it listed for 39.974
When I put an additional $500 down, the list was $47,974
My truck should have a sticker price of $47,947 because that is what it was the day I officially ordered it. I knew what the sticker was when I put down the $500.
I can understand paying taxes on that amount.
Ford increased the list price after I had money down. On MY contract, it should have nothing to do with the price increases after that.

Jim,
You are correct. I was offered the chance to order in April, but I could have only purchase a Lariat or Platinum. Purchase a higher model or wait. I chose to wait.

All,
Please don't get me wrong, I'm very grateful that Ford has grandfathered me in their pricing, and my dealer is giving me a straight price.

This may be posted elsewhere, but I'm curious how the same price increases / timing of order would affect someone purchasing a Lariat or Platinum if when they ordered their truck while it was priced <$80k, but after the list pricing changing, do they still qualify for the tax rebate if the sticker is now over $80k?

My dealer put the $5000 under (rebates) on my contract.

Once again,
Thanks everyone for the feedback. I can't wait to join the list of happy owners!

Yep that $5000 should not be on the sales order. Some people were frustrated they had to pay sales tax on that $5000 because their dealer charged them the $5000 with the intention of sending them a check later if ford honors it. But that makes a tiny bit of sense because they weren’t guaranteed the $5000. But your dealer is doing it really weird.

The Lariat and Platinum got bumped in august but haven’t since. The XLT did. And at one point I think you could order an XLT ER with no options and get under 80k since they removed the destination charge from the IRS 80k limit, but not anymore since the price increase

Same here. Do we have to make a claim (if so how?) or do we have to wait for Ford to send us a 5K check? Appreciate it if you share what you know so far. I was told by Ford Marketing to wait.
Thanks!

jimfigler,
Do you have any information from Ford documenting this?
I'd like to go in with proof, vs. "I read on a forum..."

Thanks again,

The $5k is the price protection and Ford Marketing has nothing to do with that. That’s between you and you dealer. It is a separate system (Dora?) dealer has to access to find that protected price. Some dealers seem to play dumb with the price protection.

I was referring to the window sticker. Will all trucks built after 12/14/22 have current MSRP price? There is no 3rd incentive for last $4k price increase right?
My Pro was built on 12/31 (build week 12/19) and the sticker price does not reflect the final $4k bump. It might be that the sticker price is set at the time when vehicle gets scheduled for production (which happened sometime in November for me).

It depends on when the window sticker was generated. The window sticker is normally generated 2 weeks or something like that prior to build week if I remember correctly
