Hey there, im new to the forum here, I have a Lightning and recently put larger Falcan Tires and 18" rims on it, gives it a much beefier look similar to a Raptor...i anticipated some range decline, but its almost 20% decrease in range from the first day.
Now (In Calgary, Canada) we are seeing our first cold snap of the year with -15 to -20 over night and day time highs...but my range is almost down 60%
when i first had it and the stock wheels with the Platinum, i was getting 480-490kms...with the new tires im getting it said 400km in range, and in the last few days of the cold im down to 250km on a full charge and at 52% battery im showing 98km in range left,

i made an appointment with the dealership here, but thought i would try some feedback on this group as well

thanks!

Truck looks great with those wheels and rims but I expect they are having an impact, since the stock wheels are aero designed for the truck and to achieve the epa range claims. I’ve even seen some people speculate that adding mudflaps to the lightning could impact the aerodynamics! I’m in Canada also and have a thread on this cold weather experience. Some have predicted a 25% range loss with freezing winter weather but without any heat pump technology, I’m budgeting a 30 to 40% loss once we get into the deep freeze. I don’t think anyone’s lightning has seen a winter so the months ahead will tell.

two things I found that help with this is leaving the truck plugged in, even when charging is not required so the battery management system can do it’s thing and keep your battery happy. I also precondition it while plugged in so it’s ready to go before go to work and my morning routine before going to work also includes starting it with the FordPass app, again while it’s still plugged in, to take stress off the battery. I have found all of these steps are helping, though in Ontario we’ve had a mild Fall so far but your weather is coming our way

Nice and thanks for the replies. I didn't anticipate that much loss in range with the tires and cold weather, but nice to know I'm not going crazy here. I'll try plugging in here each night and starting while plugged in as well to try too I have an appointment with the dealership as well this week so hopefully they might see something as well. Or is just the price I pay for the big tires 😂😂

If you don’t know already, I believe Ford recommends maintaining a 20/30% to 90% charge for every day driving and only charge to 100% for long road trips..
Yeah plug it in as often as possible during the winter months
There really is no advantage in waiting for your trucks battery to be very low before you charge it up ⚡
Also I’ve been getting a lot of feedback from peeps and most think the on Smart range(km) predictor is garbage 😂 , not at all accurate..

Welcome!
  • How much range do you need for the things you need the truck to do?
  • Do you have time between those needs to adequately charge the truck while you don't need to use it?

If you can check both those boxes to your satisfaction, enjoy the truck and the biggest tires you want and don't stress over what the range display is. If not, you might need to reconsider things. That's the beauty of being able to economically refuel during the 6-8-10 hours/day the truck waits for its next use.

Are you losing Ranger or is the Guess-o-Meter range going down?

I imagine it's a combination of the cold, the new wheels (which do look great), and also potentially your driving style. Which drive mode do you use?

There seems to be an Ideal climate for our current Lightning that isn't obvious in the Ford advertising.
Outside of these areas Ford successfully tested the truck, and it works just as well in all areas, except for its range.
It seems the buyer needs to determine if this vehicle works for you where and when you plan to use it.

I recently pulled my 8500 lb boat out at the State Park ramp. When I entered in the trailer information, weight and sizes it asked for my range on the GOM went down 70%.
However when I completed the 10 mile trip the GOM went right back up and it only used 15 miles for the 10 mile trip. The GOM went right back up after I disconnected the trailer.

You ran into the double range zapper here. The wheels will definitely have an impact, but not as much as cold will, this is one of the challenges of EVs. The more severe the cold the bigger impact. I would recommend using pre-conditioning, which should warm the truck and potentially batteries for better performance. I can’t remember if the Lightning has a battery heater which helps scavenge heat and keep batteries warm, but just be cautious on range driving in the cold since it has a strong impact on battery performance and efficiency. and stay warm your self.

What was the tire size you went to? I was thinking 275 65 18 with a winter tire. Do you think this will decrease range?

That’s what happened to me
Also. Dealer can’t do anything. It happened to me on the Mach e and xlt lightning when I changed from factory set up

I have a Lariat ER and drive to Tahoe this past weekend from Sacramento. It’s about 100 mile trip and temp was roughly 30F. I have made many trips there already with range dropping due to the elevation climb. But this recent trip I had the heat on and heated seats, I was surprised by how much battery % it used up. When I started I had 280 miles of range and ended up with 40. (I forget the actual battery percentage before and after). also I wish the battery percentage was listed beside the range meter on the display. I agree that the cold weather and interior climate control (heat) drops the range considerably. however the range estimate is not a great guide either. Funny thing is when I reset the driving history with a 90% charge it used to show above 280 miles but now shows around 230. It’s like the driving history doesn’t actually get reset.

I am worried about getting up the mountain in colder weather (in normal conditions its not a problem). During major storms the highway patrol can shut down the highway and everyone has to sit there and wait. Considering there are not many chargers between Sacramento and Tahoe I am not sure what will happen if they shut it down and we are having to sit there for hours.

That being said I absolutely love the truck. Much better than I expected.

Cold weather seems to be the Achilles heel for this vehicle. When it comes to cold weather, Ford’s marketing focusses on the traction and handling [no surprise there, it weighs as much as a small pachyderm, so that together with its lower centre of gravity will track well in the snow and slippery surfaces). It’s not that cold yet and it’s not faring well when it comes to range loss. Though everyone criticizes the efficacy of Tesla‘s heat pump technology, the newer version speak for themselves and even Kia is using them. Not sure why Ford didn’t consider This option more seriously to winter proof the performance of these trucks. Don’t get me wrong, I love my lariat but super disappointed with the cold weather performance and given the range los be experienced already won’t be surprised at at least a 50% discount when winter really digs in
