The Lightning was up on the off-limits pedestal. Thanks to Mike I was able to get up there and have Sarah show me around the Lightning inside and out. (If you go to the show and ask really nicely to get up there to see it, they will still say no.)

My apologies for the bad colors. Ford's display of it's star vehicle uses dramatic blue LED lighting that completely distorts colors. I shot many of them in RAW and tried to color correct but it was hopeless. All of these are uncorrected.

So, here are exterior shots. The color of this Lariat is Carbonized Gray -- yes, really. It was the only Lightning there.

Thanks for the picture of the L14-30 receptacle. That 7.2kW is all the Intelligent* backup power I would need for the critical load panel in my house, including 240V well pump. I will very happily retire my generator and simply use Lightning.


* - Intelligent because there's no reason to get carried away when I already have all I need

here's some of those ADAPTERS to make good use of that extra 7.2Kw 240v power coming from the LIGHTNING... for your other 20amp 120v outlet needs, or for your RV camper or fifthwheel, etc.... OR, for powering your home, whether via extension cords, or a 240v 30amp connection to your power panel....... Fantastic.

Agreed. However, be careful not to overload the circuit.

The Lightning appears to come with a NEMA L14-30R 30A locking receptacle, implying a 30A limit to the circuit (we won't know for sure until someone can check out the circuitry, specifications, or wiring diagram for the Lightning).

Your top two adapters look like a NEMA 5-20R and a TT-30R (RV) receptacle. At 20A and 30A, respectively, those would be within the load limits.

The bottom adapter you shared looks like a NEMA 14-50. That would allow the use of up to 50A devices that may exceed the load rating of the outlet.

7.4kw is exactly 30amp at 240v, yes.

anytime anyone uses an 'adapter', the owner has to be aware of the amperage they are asking the unit to provide - but it's also reasonable to assume that the truck's 30amp 240v outlet has it's own internal breaker to manage overusage - you can see that same outcome on videos describing this same usage from the Ford F150 HYBRIB, which has the same 30amp 240v outlet - the video shows that asking for 'too much' amperage causes the truck to simply 'time out' and shut down it's output - until the owner goes back into the truck and 'resets' the power output. Simple.

Right, my mistake. I overlooked that those were 120V. Those would be fine. I fixed my earlier post.

Agree that would be on the owner to be aware of amps not matching up with the circuit, but having some of these can be invaluable. As a Tesla owner too, I like the one for the 14-50 for helping out a fellow owner, or even a MachE or other car that uses a 14-50 receptacle. The good new is that Tesla continues to modify their phone app, you can adjust the amperage down before starting the charging session. You can also do that from the car.

Bigger question here I'm not sure I've seen - what is the "breaker" reset for these should you overload a circuit? Does the truck have a breaker or a fuse?

Tesla's have neither. There is nothing accessible by human if you overload or have a problem with a circuit. They use mosfet's on the circuit boards. Several good Youtube video's that can describe more about them better than I can. The mosfets automatically reset after time.

They almost certainly have to all be GFCI protected by Code. I'm not sure what form it would take.

I was told at the DC Auto Show this week that they are GCFI protected.

GFCI would be mandatory as they are outside exposed to moisture - it's built into the outlet, and the 'reset' buttons are what you see above them. Now, that does NOT apply to the 240v 30amp outlet, as 240v outlets do not have the same mandate, and generally are not GFCI compatible. This is the same for campground pedestal outlets, whether 30amp 120v or 50amp 240v - neither are GFCI.

has anybody noticed the obvious 'extension cord' in the 12v battery compartment in the 'frunk'??
