I expect someone will tell me this is in the manual somewhere, and I am sorry for not reading it, Frankly, I learn more about my truck here than from my manual or dealership.

What are the secrets of locking/unlocking with the door handles? My results have been inconsistent.

For example.
  • Walking up to a lightning rear door and trying to unlock it with the handle seems not to work. Either front door, no problem.
  • Trying to lock the lightning with any handle is very inconsistent, and I end up giving up and using the door panel lock button.

OTOH, Perhaps it is all very clear and consistent if only I knew the secrets. Perhaps I need to be more patient, not have cold hands, fail to stroke the button with enough affection, or there is a secret handshake or some sacrifice ritual that I am not performing.

Any clarity on this is welcome. Thanks

Are you using a fob or PaaK?

I’ve have the same problem, FOB or PaaK.

Both front and back doors, back door far more often. Occurs very randomly though if i had an observation i would say less often since it got cold.
I watched this earlier today, and I was trying to open the doors wrong. This has been working perfectly for me so far:

Your problems are not uncommon. It isn't the best of systems. I also have unlock issues on the back doors, front much more consistent and reliable. On the lock button. I can touch the button on the front door two or three times and it will do nothing. Then I can bump the button on the back door with my arm (the garage is tight on that side) and it will lock just as I walk by and bump it, even if I have a jacket on. I thought they were touch sensitive.

I'm just hoping Walk Away lock is activated soon and will help with this.

Watch the video @Simsonic just posted. It will help.

For opening, be patient. Place your hand inside the handle and wrap your fingers around it WITHOUT PUSHING THE LOCK BUTTON. Watch the lights and mirrors to see when the truck responds.

To lock just press the button without placing your hand inside the handle.

PaaK has its own idiosyncrasies that compound this. The phone has to be alert/awake for PaaK to function. FordPass also has to be running, although running in the background is usually sufficient. However, if the phone screen is blank you may need to wake it up.

You can also press the bottom two buttons on the keypad to lock the truck, have been using that on my fords for years and still do it out of habit.

Thank you all for the secret sharing, especially @ChasingCoral. Clearly, there are a lot of different approaches to lock/unlock, legacy support, and new interfaces, some digital and others mechanical; I anticipate we may find some of these in conflict. I can foresee a future where locking profiles will be required,

I agree. This community is a great help. I was locking the doors with the keypad, which is easy to do, but now I do it with the black button, which is easier. I just happened to be doing it wrong. Now I know.

Coming from VAG I just wave my hand over the lock button and don't have to press it.

To be honest, I didn't even realize it was a button until I watched the posted video. I thought it was just a mark :)

Try it and see if you have the same results.
