We all think we will one day run the LVB out and then nothing will work. Hyundai Ioniq 5 has this Orange indicator right on the dash. Ford should build this on the Mach E and Lightning.

Just an idea, I have a LED Indicator showing me the voltage, and also a Bluetooth 12V battery health device that my phone syncs with.

I like Tesla's solution a lot better; going to 48 volt lithium. It kills a whole lot of troublesome birds with one stone.

…till it’s time to replace. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
You make an excellent point. Designing the LVB to last the life of the vehicle takes that problem away from most owners. In the unlikely event it should someday need to be replaced, it is a small price to pay for the other benefits.

But that 48V will need a huge change in the industry for all parts made as everything is still 12V.

Tesla asking everyone to change which will be a huge shift all across the world ..
No, Tesla's not asking everybody to change. They are just doing it. This will force a shift in the rest of the industry the same way Cadillac's shift from 6 to 12 volts did in 1953.

why 48 volts? I watched Sandy and Elon interview and they talked about it should be 48 but did not say for what reason?
Higher voltage can deliver the same power with lower amperage, thus smaller gauge copper wire. Save on cost and weight.

No advantage for 12v other than it’s the standard, but tesla doesn’t give a crap since they are going to build everything in house.

  • All associated wiring would be 1/4 the size/weight.
  • Heat created by components reduced by 75%.
  • Heavy heat sinks eliminated or significantly reduced.
  • Advantages carry over to all LV components.
  • Much more power for heavy draw components (think winches etc).
  • Far more robust when combatting things like parasitic draw (both Ford & Rivian are having fits with this).
For more detail, watch the Invester Day vid.
