There’s cool new features, new bugs, and bug fixes that come with the updates. Sometimes actual enhancements to performance.

You can always have the dealer’s service department install them but I do believe they’ll charge a fee for the time.

You can go to the dealer and ask them to apply the updates for you (using USB I believe). The truck may have to be there for a few days though.

Invasion of privacy? Your truck has software on it. Occasionally, Ford pushes different, presumably better software to the truck. The only privacy issue is if you didn't want Ford to know what software was on your truck.

That said, your truck has various ways of communicating various bits of information to Ford. If you don't want your location data sent to a database on a server controlled by Ford you'd probably have to disconnect the modem and wifi modules. How to do that is beyond my knowledge and there may be side affects I can't think of right now. Also, don't use a cell phone.

I don't like the invasion of privacy so I have OTA turned off.

Am I risking anything?
On the front end we see new features come in during the installation of PowerUps. What is often in the background are important updates to modules that make sure the truck keeps running properly.

I assume you keep your computer/phone operating systems up to date. Why would you not do so on your truck? If your phone dies you miss a call. If your truck dies ...

I agree with most of the comments. Here is my two cents.

The key thing I would say is, it is way to early in the technology journey of the truck to not get the OTA updates. They are sending out lots of regular updates that will likely contain more than just "bells and whistles". Updates that will improve both performance (battery capacity) and safety (cruise control, PAAK, these kinds of features) and you likely dont want to have to go to the service center at some expensive fee per hour to have them do a simple update.

Thanks for all the comments.

I admit I was spooked by the verbiage about recording interior photos of the occupants just prior to a crash and sending them to the Ford database. That sounded intrusive.

I don't mind using my picture, and it is me.

I am concerned about not getting updates, which is why I posted.

I could be mistaken but I don't think there are any interior facing cameras in a Lightning.
You are mistaken. All Blue Cruise capable Lightnings have a pair of IR cameras watching the driver for attentiveness to the road.

I believe that the truck sends data to Ford, whether you have OTA updates on or not.

Ok last update caused issues with my Sirius. I stopped getting it. Also lost my hands free driving. It tells me blue cruise is on but the hands free never starts. Went to dealer they won't reload update. Told me I had to wait till next update to fix it.
Got home and called Ford. They were nice and looked Into it. They told me my truck did get updated. Also told them no issues with the download. Did see a small issue with 12v system. Then went on to say ford shit down hands free driving due to issues. I don't believe that. My truck is not getting satellite signal. That's why no xm or hands free both need satellite.
They called dealer with me on phone and told them to check 12v system and flash my truck again with last download that was done beginning of February. That's the one that gave us NBC news

I have been meeting auto updates come through as well. The last month the latest update could not upload, so after reading other similar issues I manually started the update during a charge cycle. When I tried to leave the next morning I got a yellow wrench and reduced power. I immediately shut the truck off and restarted. It then ran normally except the yellow wrench was on the lower center display. After 1 hour of being shut off I went to go home and the yellow light was gone. Seems to be OK now, dealer said to monitor it. Also the is a SR XLT it also has a facial camera looking all the time.

Well. You are on a forum on the internet. I doubt your truck will ever put your privacy at this level of risk.

That said, one of the best protections to your privacy (from hackers) is up-to-date software.
