So, opening the frunk on some Lightnings may be a little tricky. Here's an SSM just released:

Hopefully the software fix will come more quickly than the long-promised frunk opening for the job 1 Mustang Mach Es.

Nice find and very helpful. Great things to share. Is that a Ford only announcement? Are they found publicly anywhere?

These announcements are distributed internally within Ford.

Thank you for posting. What is 2-stage unlocked?
Pushing the button twice. Instructions for unlocking the frunk start on page 334 of the manual.

I don’t know if this is related but I just got my lightning a few days ago and when I open the frunk it stops after only opening about a foot. My dealer and I tried to set it at a higher setting by holding the button. It beeps like it has accepted the new height but then the next time I open it, it only opens a foot again. Anyone else seen this?

My frunk stopped closing or opening this morning. I took delivery last weekend 6/17/22 it has 400 miles on it now. (Lariat big battery) I can manually close and open it. It does unlatch with the fob, the bottom on dash, and on the touchscreen. But beeps twice then nothing. Then I get a warning on the cluster stating a fault and to have it serviced. Nothing in the way way of any sensors and I checked the 40 amp fuse. So back to the dealer it will go. I will keep you updated.

I also tried holding the button after I raised it until it beeped now back to just popping and then nothing but a warning light

Hi there! Will you send us a message with your VIN and your local Ford dealer? I can look into things on my end.

This is my vin number of my new lightning with the faulty frunk issue as posted on this forum. I have a dealership service appointment at Chapman Ford in Egg Harbor Township New Jersey on Thursday June 30th. If you could follow up on what they find. It only started this weekend and nothing has even been placed in the frunk yet. Thanks for looking into this.

So I just picked up my lightning from the dealer for the faulty frunk. 6/30/22. They are ordering new lift cylinders for it. (I don’t think that’s it because sometimes it works great and sometimes it just releases and never even tries to open or if it does, it may only open halfway and sometimes it won’t close at all (just beeps) then I have to manually put it down very slowly and once it hits the catch the latch pulls in into the fully parked position. It certainly sounds like a software issue but the the dealer says put the parts to n it and go from there. I don’t necessarily like my truck being a Guinea pig but maybe they are correct. I’ll keep everyone updated

Thanks for the update. That sounds more like what my frunk is doing. Let us know if the new lift cylinders fix it. I agree, it seems like more of a software issue. I guess this is the price we have to pay since we are some of the first lightning owners.

Did the new lift cylinders take care of the frunk issue? Mine got stuck today coming down when someone tried to force it to go on down. I think it was a protective mechanism to prevent closing against resistance or obstruction. I opened it back up with the button but could not get it to close (with button or manual pressure) until I pressed the button on the left of the steering wheel and then was able to manually close the frunk. Afterwards it opened and closed as normal (with a possibly different sound at final latch, I’m not sure if it was making this sound before or not).

Any updates on this? I’m having the same issue with mine.
I ended up selling my lightning through Carvana. 2 weeks after that, the dealer called stating that my parts (lift cylinders) had arrived. I told them I already sold it. I will miss my truck but not the $1107 per month payment. For those interested, Carvana was great. $93,000 (a direct deposit of almost $20,000 and paid off my loan. Took maybe 10 minutes total. I guess I’ll start saving for the 2025 model.

My frunk still only opens a foot. I have gotten used to just opening it the rest of the way manually. Eventually, I’ll take it in to get it fixed but the car dealer says they are a month out from available appointments and when I asked, nobody had a clue what was going on. I’m hopeful that it can be fixed with a software update and I don’t have to get it serviced. Maybe if enough people complain about it then they’ll make it a priority.
