I am not saying don't buy one, I am saying don't order one; at this time.

The SR equipped Lightning's range is going to disappoint many owners once they find out that the "230 mile range" is pretty restricting in the real world (160 usable). There are a ton of these trucks starting to flood the market, and by summer expect some pretty good discounts on them.

If you fall into the category of being able to use the SR for your purpose, I would recommend not actually ordering one at this time. You will be able to pick them up for less money in just a few months.

The ER equipped trucks will hold their value a lot better, so there is merit to still placing an order for a new one if you are buying the longer range version.

Just a PSA for those on the fence and looking for advice.

I acknowledge there may be a few where it is just fine, for most, particularly if you live in a cold climate, it is a hard no go.

Right. What we saw with other vehicles like the P60, way too many were ordered because the price point was easier to swallow. But then the vehicle ended up kind of giving Tesla a black eye due the overall dissatisfaction with the range and charging speeds. By then too many were out there, supply>demand, and the resale on them cratered.

I expected it to take a little longer with the Lightning due to the slower ramp-up; but checking Carvana, Driveway, Autotrader & the like, here they come. If people keep ordering them they way they have, there are going to be a lot of really great deals for them by summer.

I'm completely positive my 2023 Pro SR that cost $35754 with options, destination and tax credit will hold its value better than any other Lightning model SR or ER especially those ridiculously priced Platinum.
Also does your poor efficiency you used to come up with a SR range of 160 miles apply to the ER as well? If so, that would give the XLT/Lariat ER a 214-mile range and 200-mile range for the Platinum. Or is it somehow immune to this poor efficiency and the ER still gets 320/300 miles? If not, then 16k on a XLT or 11k on a Lariat is a lot to pay for 54 miles. Especially if you don't need it, since 35 miles is the national average daily driven mileage.

I agree with what you said here. There is about a $8k-$10k -price difference and I could not justify that, plus losing the tax rebate on top of that. Yes, the cold range sucks; but for 80 miles difference (320 on ER and 240 on SR) it was just not worth it - to me. I'll know more now that I have the truck, so time will tell.

I agree, $36k is right in the ballpark. So, back to the people I was actually talking to (lol), if you cannot order an SR equipped vehicle for that today (you can't), I would wait.

That was the point of the post, not to disparage your vehicle.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my XLT SR. happy to crank out a 300 mile trip. Just did this last weekend in low 40's. was running 2.2 - 2.3 miles per kWh, so plenty of range with my 98 kWh battery. Yes I have to stop once. but I'm past middle age and must stop more frequently than every 3 hours anyway. Not sure if this info is coming from someone who has actually owned or used an SR, or just an opinion looking to cause controversy.

Ok. Maybe I did not phrase it correctly.

I am not disparaging you vehicle, nor am I saying that the vehicle has no merit. What I said, is don't order an SR at this time. You will be able to get one much cheaper in 6 months compared to what you would pay now. If you cannot wait 6 months for the vehicle, then order if you must... but the time it will take to get it will not be that much difference in the end.

Again. I am not bad-mouthing your truck, just making a super safe prediction for those coming on here posting about being on the fence about ordering right now.

First of all no one can predict depreciation amounts. I sold my five year old F 150 at 80 percent of what I paid for it to buy my lightening. I financed my lightening using the Ford Options plan so if the price tanks I’ll just hand it back to Ford.

Well, quite a bit of effort and expense goes into doing just that in the car biz.

Are you saying you do not believe the forecasting model? That is certainly fair, and a fun little exercise actually. Flag your calendar app for 6 months from now, and revisit this post.

As a licenced car dealer for many years, I retired quite nicely by not being wrong about this type of thing. Nobody's perfect, come summer this prediction could be proven totally wrong.

Forecasting models are great in a mature market but this is a new market with little real history to plug into the model. Ford's been selling ICE Explorer's for 20 plus years so there is a ton more information to plug into the model.
Plus you may qualify upfront for a $7500 tax credit for the SR but not the ER which affects the overall economics of the purchase for the buyer.

I'm actually more interested in the market in 31 months when my option plan financing is up. If the value is substantially less than the balloon payment, then I just hand it back to Ford and its their loss.

Just trying to be helpful.

Happy to catch up with you in July to compare notes.

Loving my SR XLT, It is cold where I live an I am seeing around 145miles of range in the cold. My work commute is 40 miles round trip, leaving 100 miles of cushion. Sure the ER pack would have been nice but it's not 20K nice. The SR is working fine for me, I knew what I as buying when I made the purchase.

There are quite a bit of unknowns still on the horizon. My XLT SR I’d still recommend even at the increased prices. If you seriously have the dough you midst well go for a Lariat ER but Pro SR and XLT SR are still a good if you can find one available. Now, if you said to reconsider buying a Lariat SR I’d agree with you as my dealerships demo is still on the lot in this form factor as the price jump and loss of tax rebate after adding a few options makes less sense. The SR could become the new IPhone with below average battery capacity with great functionality and popularity. If the charging network increases in charge time it won’t make a difference which battery you use as it’s like comparing the size of your fuel tank. Pro and XLT SR are still a great buy.

Last night it was in the low teens with 15-20 mph winds. I barely made the spirited 140 mile round trip drive to the airport to pick up my wife and toddler with my ER battery. I was getting 1.1 mi/kW. I am super happy managed to got a Pro with the ER battery pack for $55,000. I would have had to drive 60 mph without heat to even have a chance of making that journey with the smaller SR pack.

Dear R.I.P. - I've gone back and looked at all your posts. Clearly you are a Tesla fan boy, who simply wishes to spread disinformation to help the Tesla cause. I expect you don't own and never will own, a Ford F150 lightning. This group is intended for lightning owners and those waiting for their vehicles. Can you politely kick yourself off our forum?

While RIP may be a bit of a Tesla fan that is ok. He adds a wealth of battery and EV knowledge and experience to the discussion.

Aw, thanks.

I'm a car buff. At the moment I own two Chevy's, a Ford, a Jeep, an Indian, a Caddy and yes, a Tesla. I had a Rivian, but that did not last long... Story for the Rivian forum.

I'm back in the market for an EV pickup, and yes, my next one will likely be a Lightning. It is no secret that I believe the market will turn to buyers favor in July/August. Seems reasonable to buy then.

If ya wanna be accurate, that's "Jimmy Fan Boy" to you Sparky. You see, the GMC Sierra Denali EV is the truck that really has my attention. Yes, I fully admit I have a reservation.

However, it is my intention to buy the dip, and pick up a Lightning in July or August. Sooner if prices drop more quickly than I expect them to.

Does this buy me some time here in the blue oval room? Or do I have to be "Forever Ford" be welcome here?
