I got a text from my dealer today asking if I was still interested in the Lightning. Seems they have 4 allocations that aren't spoken for, Lariat Extended Range. They offered them up to everyone on their list I guess, first come first serve.

I just bought a 2022 F-150 XLT Powerboost back during the President's Day sale in mid-February. I figured my chance at a 2022 Lightning was very low, so the Powerboost was my "wait until the 2023 or 2024 models".

The dealer did say that if we weren't interested in these allocations then we'd have to contact Ford to extend our reservations until 2023 to keep our place.

I'm thinking at this point I'm going to pass on the 2022 and wait for the '23/'24; let them work out the kinks and maybe switch over to the next-gen platform. I think they'd hose me on the trade-in, and it would be another $20K over the price of the Powerboost.

What to do, what to do?!?! lol.

Kinks, if any, are going to be interesting. The majority of what is in the Lightning is already in the regular F-Series. (Interior of the Lariat looks just like the interior of an gas powered Platinum) The screen has been in the mach e for 2+ years now. Bed is already in other F-Series for 2-4 years. The Frunk is new. Battery platform is new. IRS is new.

MY23 is going to have a new software stack for the infotainment. The one in the MY22 has been in the Mach E for 2+ years. The Android OS that will be in the MY23 has bugs and issues in the Volvo EV. You won't get away from first time kinks going to the MY23 cause they might try to do other things than just the software stack.

I would at least get a firm number on the total deal cost before I turned down the offer. This is especially true if you qualify for the full tax credit, color and trim are okay, range meets your needs, fuel price considerations, etc. Get a Carvana offer to have an idea about your Powerboost’s value. The used market is still pretty hot in a lot of places.

You make it sound like your dealer has the power to cancel your reservation. I think that's BS, and he is wrong. You have a reservation to order a truck, not a reservation to buy one off his lot, that you didn't order.

Wasn't trying to make it sound like anything, just passing on what the dealer said. Whether or not they can actually cancel it or not I'd be more comfortable just calling Ford and extending my reservation.

Yeah, I may drive over there today or tomorrow and talk to my sales guy from the Powerboost sale. Can't hurt to do that before I call Ford and extend my reservation.

Understood that most of the Lightning is the same as the existing F-150 platform. Even with this truck there are issues -- the auto-fold shifter sometimes has a mind of its own and wants to "help" me by wanting to move itself somewhere else when I try and shift into reverse or park. It's a bit touchy.

I got the same exact text. What state are you in? I am in MA. I wish they were more transparent with the reservations and how people are getting picked.

That’s a hard one to pass up but I’m sure they plan on adding a huge markup. If not then they are better than most dealers out there. You can also get a quick online quote from Carmax. My dealer offered me a lot less on my 2018 F150 last month but I showed them my offer from Carmax and they matched it. Carmax has been extremely fair when buying my vehicles.

Based on their response to my question they are still going with MSRP and "as configured", so supposedly no ADM or unwanted dealer additions.

I'm going to head over there in about 30 minutes and ask some more questions. I'll see what they say about trading the Powerboost (still under 4K miles). If everything works out except the trade-in, I'll check with CarMax; I've sold a couple cars to them in the past and done decently.

Sounds like a great opportunity! Let me know how it goes.

Just went to the dealer to find out more about the available allocations. They claim the 4 allocations were claimed within 20 minutes of the text going out. They said there were 16 people interested.

Not sure why they couldn't just send a follow-up text saying, "all spoken for", but oh well.

I'm going to call Ford and extend my reservation to 2023.

Too much work for them I guess. Sorry it didn’t pan out. At least you get to enjoy your power boost a bit longer. That’s a nice truck!

They got you to come into the dealership, didn't they?

I got a call yesterday from my dealer asking if I was interested in a Lariat extended range with the 511a package. I said that was the build I was planning on getting so he said it was mine and he was hitting the button to assign it to me. I'm still waiting for the email from Ford to allow me to place the order. This afternoon I went to the dealership, Shultz Ford in Harmarville, Pa to talk over the process and make certain that it would be MSRP with no dealer add-ons. I was assured that was the case. While there the guy I talked to gave me the key fob for their demo and let me take it for a ride. It was an XLT and really cool to drive. What a crazy 24 hours!
My reservation date was 5/27 so I wasn't expecting to be able to order until maybe late 2023. They told me to expect a late October delivery. They haven't even received their first customer delivery yet. They had 60 reservations at this location and are getting 7 trucks. I have no idea where I was on their list but I'm guessing others ahead of me passed on the $79K price tag of the Lariat.

A friend of mine in CA just told me that he was able to order a Lariat ER today as well. I wonder how many of these leftovers there are? Obviously not enough to open a wave.
