I got a call from a dealer in NC (between Durham and Greensboro) offering me 3 different Lightnings on the lot. 2 Lariots, 1 Platinum. Lariots in the 80Ks (maybe 90?), Platinum at 112K, i think. did not discuss batteries or trim, because - as i told him - I have an order in elsewhere and either way would not be not remotely interested in anything at 80 or above.

Are people walking away from the upper-tier orders?

It makes sense people would - if you (like me) signed up early for a truck you thought was gonna be 55 to 65k, but with Ford's gouging, the trim packages and possible dealer markups, you are now over 80, seems like a lot of supply will end up unwanted on dealer lots. There's another Lightning in Durham that's been on the lot for 3 months - its a Lariot that the dealer hilariously has stickered at over 100K, which is obviously nonsense, but I keep thinking that SURELY he's gotten reasonable offers for it and turned them down?

throw on top of this that a full-spec Lariot now costs you the tax credit as well... idk, that Silverado EV can't be too far off, ya know?

Anything over 80k that was just delivered is possibly someone that was hoping for a December delivery and walked when the tax credit was taken off the table. I might have walked away from my order if it hadn’t arrived in December.

that's a good point, we might have a bunch of trucks right now that missed the deadline. That's a (nearly) 10% price hit on a lariot that's just above the line.

For the first year, GM says they will only make EV pickups for fleets and a 105,000 Denali. Eased my concerns and it was a no brainer to forego the midgate, fancy tailgate, and steps in rear bumper for a few more years.

So, albeit pricey, Ford will be only game in town for the next two years -- in an electric pick up anyway.

That would be me. Delayed shipping past 12/31. bye.

Cybertruck should be in production by 4th Qtr, and it will blow the Lightning out of the water, specwise. Makes it easy to walk away from the Lightning order.

So, having been driving my '23 Lariat Lightning for the past 6 days, I'm really surprised at the sophistication of the driving experience. Obviously the EV powertrain and it's very strong hp/torque is great and butter smooth, but the ride quality, low center of gravity, the very nicely dialed in suspension, quietness, etc. is really luxury car/suv/truck level smooth.

I'm lucky enough to own a 2023 Escalade V, 2022 CT5-V Blackwing (six-speed), and a few other vehicles and I really think Ford knocked this truck out of the park. It drives as nice (or nicer!) in most areas as my $150k+ factory supercharged Escalade and to add insult to injury, the Lariat ER is faster to 60mph and likely as fast or faster in the 1/4 mile. Of course, the V sounds a lot better, but silence isn't a bad thing for a nice daily driver truck and the Lariat has that in spades.

In short, the Lightning is an expensive truck, especially the Lariat ER and Platinum trims and with the tax credit going adios, it's even more expensive. BUT, if you look around, everything is expensive nowadays and the Lightning has a significant multitude of positive qualities that will allow it to stand on it's own merits even at it's current price. Just my honest and humble opinion being a car nut and a very happy guy with my new Lightning!

thanks for that. everything IS expensive nowadays, but as the inventory goes up, that might shift a bit.

what do you think about driving around with the big 15 inch screen? my biggest regret, even more than the cost, is that i had to go up to the Lariot and that means i have to take the big screen. i wanted the smaller one.

I don't mind the big screen, but I would trade some screen real estate for a few more hard buttons, specifically a few AC buttons (recirc), camera button, etc. But, they were trying to pull a Tesla to a certain extent and went with the big screen.

It certainly doesn't bother me in daily driving and I do like the big expanded view for my Apple Carplay where I run Waze most of the time.

And you'll be able to drive a Tesla from coast to coast with no input from the driver by 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023.

I'll believe the 4th quarter news when I see them being delivered. As for specifications and price, no one knows at this point.

And you will be able to “Summon” this Cybertruck from New York while you are in California starting in Q1 2024 😛

i just don't get why these EV makers - particularly like Ford where they are trying to electrify a current car - don't have a "no screen" version. I even get having one for navigation and the phone, but everything else can be a hard button. SHOULD be a hard button.

be cheaper to make, would get you tons of attention and you could even charge me a little more.

of course i've thought for a long time, and then last month somebody showed me the 'hard buttons' inside the new Corvette, so i guess you can make anything a nightmare.

No, I just canceled my Lightning and bought a Rivian. So not the only game in town.

The Lightnings are getting less pricey, too. A lot of them popping up on the lots. Good news for those looking for one.

It is the same reason phones no longer have rotary dials on them. No, really, that is no joke. It is for exactly the same reason.

Touche!

Except we define pickup trucks differently.

I got to admit I like the Rivian, and it is probably more fun that the F150. I just don't consider it a truck.

But my gf called her Explorer a truck, so I am not one to say what is or isn't a truck.

The last time I looked at the Rivian site, you couldn’t buy one, only make a reservation and it seemed the Rivian would be about $8000 more than my 2023 Lariat ER. Is there someplace to look where Rivians are available without starting at the back of the queue? I’ve seen them for sale used, and they still seem to be going for about $10k over MSRP.
I like the Rivian vehicles (except for the grill/headlights), hopefully the next generation smaller/lower cost models will be profitable and hopefully they have enough cash to survive until they get those models to market.

I REALLY wanted an XLT with the smaller screen. Real knobs are much more convenient.

They said “Lariat or nothing“.

I’m still on the fence. Truck ordered in early September. No word yet…
