Happy to report my lightning past its first real cold-weather test
-32 degrees Celsius, -40 with the wind chill
FYI I park outside, I have a 125/250 V, Nema receptacle in my heated garage that I share with my GF Tesla, she parks indoor lol. unfortunately right now there is no room for my truck. The other half is Gym/junk
I just plug in my Ford mobile charger and close the door on top of the cord.
my XLT extended range did come with a Ford charge station pro but won’t be installing it. Anybody in the Edmonton or Calgary area? Looking to purchase one feel free to DM me. Anyway
Preconditioned the truck via the Ford app
Left home around 9 AM. It’s a 28 km drive to work. That was obviously fine. Brought my mobile charger with me thinking it would be a great idea to plug it in at work using the 110 adapter. It does not work in cold weather outside, two minutes after you plug-in. The blue light turns amber and your Ford app sends you a message saying plugged in but not charging. I tried this four times before giving up. Very worried at this point because I knew the lightning was gonna be parked outside for a minimum 10 hours in this weather.
by the time I came back to the shop, the thing look like a popsicle, I thought to myself there’s no way this fucking thing is going to start. I’m gonna have to call my girlfriend and she’s gonna have to come rescue me in her tesla and make fun of me for the rest of my life…
Initially, a whole bunch of warning lights came on, but other than that no real issues 60 km round-trip only 20% battery used, not bad!!

Here is a thought to chew on. It is quite possible that the BMS is telling you "yeah, at this temp none of that 1.2kw (110v) is going to charging the battery, because I will be using all of it to just keep the battery from freezing"... hence the "not charging" message. In this case, there is certainly a benefit to leaving it plugged in.

That would be good to confirm if that is what the BMS is actually trying to tell us. Anyone from Ford or more technical to confirm? Bueller?

That's a solid point. I'd bet all the 110v juice was just keeping battery warm; maybe even needed some battery juice, too. I heard a Ford guy say on a SOC video that the truck does not let the battery go below 0 C (32 F).

Good point
I just assumed that when the blue light turned yellow, it meant fault/error
Thanks for the tip

I was just going to ask if anyone noticed if the indicator on the mobile charger was amber or not? I’m plugged in in Ohio after a trip in middle of this storm, 3 degrees outside but feels -24 F with wind chill. Was charging until this Morning and now is showing amber on the unit and the app says plugged in not charging.

In manual it says amber on unit indicates overheating, but I can’t imagine that’s happening in these conditions. Cant find anything about using in extreme cold in manual or online.
