Hey all!

I purchased 2022 Ford Lightning from Ford of Branford in Conneticut a month ago. I live in Minneapolis, but I wanted an ER Lariat under 80K (so I could get the tax credit) - these are tough to find so when I found one on their website, I took action.

Since I was going to be selling my old vehicle, I wanted to make sure I got the Ford Wallbox charger from SunRun ASAP. As I was finishing paperwork and wiring the money, I asked the dealer what we needed to do to get the charger sent. They said don’t worry, SunRun will call you. Frustrating, but no worries, I’ll be patient.

Fast forward a week - nothing from SunRun. I call again. The dealer gives me SunRuns number. Leave a message.

3 days later SunRun comes back and says this vehicle isn’t “marked as sold” - weird, it’s in my garage.

Call the dealer again - leave a message. Another 3 days go by. It’s now been two weeks, patience is getting thinner…

Dealer responds and says they need to talk to their rep and figure out why it isn’t marked as sold. Weird, seems pretty standard to me, but alright. (Meanwhile I’d had an electrician booked for 3 weeks after purchase - he charged me a cancellation fee).

Fast forward another week - I’m now being told the vehicle has recalls on it and it can’t be marked as sold until the recalls are taken care of. Again, a little frustrating but alright. Can a dealer even sell you a vehicle that has open recalls on it?

I call a local dealer. Earliest apt is April 4th - but the parts for the recall won’t be available until Q4 of 2023. I’ve tried to contact the dealer I purchased from - they aren’t willing to do anything about it. Very unresponsive and a poor experience.

Not to mention when the vehicle is finally marked as sold, SunRun then takes 3-5 business days to even recognize it and start the process (from what they told me).

Has anyone else had this bad of an experience trying to get the charger (that you paid for up front)? I’m using 110V to charge right now, I can get about a mile of range every 2 hours of charge. I can’t go anywhere 😂

Trying not to complain too much but man, this experience has stunk so far.

Talk me off this cliff!! 🤣

I had a similar experience with the SunRun aspect of this process. It took about three weeks after delivery of my ER to get the FCSP, after I had to call SunRun like 4 times to confirm that I was indeed the new owner. Unsure why SunRun isn't great at this part of the transaction.

Sunrun has been terrible in some markets, just search "sunrun" in the forum.

When the electrician was getting antsy, you should have had him install the wiring and put in a 240v plug. That way you can buy a portable unit like the Ford power cord or any of the 100s of options on the market. Charging on 110v is a last resort.

Since you "can't go anywhere", have a look around for chargers in your area, the more you look, the more you'll find. Level 3 chargers will get you up and running in no time.

I picked up my truck on 2/13, got an email from Sunrun on 2/15 to verify my address, and charger was at my front door on 2/21. It seemed Sunrun had this figured out. I really think the biggest thing is having the dealer do the transaction to make sure it's sold in the system. Seems like the dealer doesn't want to play nice.

Appreciate the reply - wish I would’ve done that with the electrician. Unfortunately the nearest level 3 charger is 20+ miles, I actually am about 45 miles west of Minneapolis in a small town.

My frustration is more with the dealer I purchased from vs SunRun 😕

Thanks for the response - jealous of your experience! I think you’re right. Not sure what to do about the dealer.

You should direct your ire at Ford. They set up this stupid system where they promise you a charger and don't give it to you when you take delivery. What you experienced was a known issue within Ford in January, maybe earlier. For some reason, with demo and allocation vehicles the required information gets stuck in Ford's system. To make matters worse it is impossible to get ahold of anyone who has the power to do anything about it.

It took six full weeks between when I bought my truck and when I was united with my charger. When Sunrun got around to sending it they sent it to the parts department at my dealer. They didn't know why they got it or whose it was. My salesperson connected the dots.

Very similar experience with the Delayed Sunrun “Sold” status but Much better dealer experience and I had no open recalls. Sorry you went thru all that.

I think mine was delayed 2 weeks after I picked up the unit - but my Electrician is a neighbor and friend and we just used the wait to run the conduit together and get the wall’s drilled out for the cable run...then his schedule was flexible enough to come back and just wire it up and get the circuit breaker panel reorganized.

He also ran my manual breaker cutoff and the 240 v twist lock port for my portable generator years ago. We decided to have him add a bypass switch and an additional 240 v twist lock port next to the ChargeStation Pro so I can back the truck in during a power outage and run the house from the 240 v a/b circuits from the Truck (7.2 Kw) instead of using the generator - but I can always switch to generator when I need to. That additional work will cost me $700 - much cheaper than the Sunrun auto switching solution and gets me what I need!

But the 80 amp ChargeStation pro on its new 240v 100amp circuit is working very well.
I was asking the OP. Where there's a will there's a way to safely get better charging while they wait for their FCSP. A dryer plug would be a good start.

I have a dryer on 240V yes, but no way to use 240 to charge my truck, unfortunately.
There's a remedy for that. How close is the truck to the dryer? What are you using for an EVSE right now? The $500 Ford Mobile will not (safely) work off the dryer receptacle, but there are lots of low-priced alternatives that will safely charge the truck at 16A, which is probably > 2 1/2 times what you're seeing now. There's an "Ejuicion" one on Amazon for $120 after $30 off. I have one of these from Costco that works well off dryer receptacles on 30A circuits.

If you are in for such a long wait bail on the charge station pro and buy a 40 amp, given charging times you won’t notice that much difference especially if you are charging overnight. My local utilities has a $250 rebate for certain chargers. If your heart is set on CSP there are a ton for sale on the forum and then just sell yours when you get it. Not ideal for sure, but might be worth an extra $900 to get your amazing new truck up and running.

I did pretty much the same as @jmft08. I sold the FCSP and bought an Autel 50A. Got a $400 rebate from my electric Co-op which almost paid for the Autel. Will also get some Federal credit on my taxes for the Autel and the install.

Sometimes perfect is the enemy of good. In a perfect world, 100 A pre-wiring would be in place and just install a 14-50R and use the EVSE he has now while waiting for the FCSP. I don't know what he is using now, that didn't get answered. Assuming it's the Ford Mobile that would put a 30 Amp 100% load on a 240V/30A dryer circuit. No bueno.

I made my 16A dryer receptacle suggestion reading between the lines on how he didn't get the electrician out before the truck arrived, can't use the truck very much now, 'is there anything to help in the interim?' feeling from the original post. A cheap 240V/16A capable EVSE (which could be an adjustable 40A EVSE), 12/3 HD extension cord, Dryer 10-30P or 14-30P to 6-20R dogbone...24A charging capacity of the dryer circuit doesn't work for commonly available #12/3 extension cords. He could have it tomorrow for safe ~4 kW charging would be "good" enough to get ~100 miles on a long overnight charge session while he waits.

I did exactly what Voltz is suggesting. Reading about all the delays with Sunrun, I had my electrician come out prior to getting the truck delivered and install a 60A circuit and a 14-50R plug temporarily where the Charge Station Pro was going to live. Figuring it would take me 3 weeks to get the Pro from Sunrun, this would allow me to charge with the mobile charger in the mean time. Electrician just left some extra wire so he could mount it where it needed to move when it showed up. Ended up costing me an extra $138 to have him back out to do the final installation when it showed up, which was definitely worth the money for me.

Still may make sense if you can get your electrician out to just install an outlet, because you still might be a few weeks out (unfortunately). Can't hurt to ask for a price at least.

You are probably pushing the limit with that 6/3 for 48A continuous, did you or your electrician de-rate via dial in charger?
