Hello all,

I finally completed all the paperwork and picked up my 2023 F-150 Lariat last night. First - what an amazing and beautiful machine this is. I have never experienced anything like it.

With that said, I did run into an issue with the FordPass Activation that I wish my dealer had been aware of. Apparently the current SYNC4 system has issues activating the modems on the 2023 model year vehicles. The only options are to wait for the OTA update later this month to address it or to have the dealer activate the modem at their service center.

The impact is that none of the “connected” services in the vehicle work correctly, like planning out charging stops because the navigation requires connectivity to do so. You can still use a 3rd party app to lookup charging locations and route to them, but the navigation system cannot “plan” routes. It also prevents you doing preconditioning and other connected things in the FordPass app.

Had I known this ahead of time I would have asked my dealer to do it before I drive off the lot. The call center at Ford was very nice and felt bad that I had not been made aware of this at the dealer.
I just wanted anyone who is close to picking up theirs soon is aware of this and can advise their dealer ahead of time to prepare the modem before you depart the dealer.

Wishing you all the best!

Thanks for the heads-up, I should be picking up my 2023 Lariat SR later this month. I will text my dealer to ensure this is done ahead of me picking it up. That is very helpful. Enjoy your new truck!

I had a few connected services that took a few days to start working on my 2023, but everything started working about the 3rd day. I still don’t have my FordPass rewards points because FordPass Rewards report that my modem has not been activated. I call and they said that everything looks good and to call back if I still didn't have my points 30 days after taking delivery

I had the same issue with my 2023 Lariat ER. Ford tech support said the modem showed up in their system until 5 days before I took delivery. It ended up being that the modem was partially unplugged from the harness which is under the console.

While I have been trying to track my delivery the FordPass app keeps giving me the feature unavailable error (attached). I was cropping that up to them not wanting us to be able to access early, but is this the error you were seeing?

One must have the vehicle turned on, and be in/near the vehicle to connect to Ford Pass.

You must be in it to respond on screen to the request or you can be wherever you want and have someone in the truck respond on the screen.

I had the very same issue upon taking delivery. I didn’t have connectivity for about six days. Dealership was clueless, Ford tech-support was honest in telling me they’re having significant problems getting the modems to wake back up after leaving the factories that place the car in “travel mode“, so I just had to wait. Randomly on the way to work on the sixth day it turned on. No explanation, no callback from tech-support, it just turned on. Very frustrating and hope this doesn’t indicate future problems with their tech platform.

UPDATE:

Today I noticed icons on top right of screen that looked comms related. I checked the Fordpass App and the MOdem Status was Activated! I still had to perform the master reset so I could Activate it again but this time it worked and I have full access now in the App.

The dealer is supposed to set up Ford Pass for you. Mine tried and couldn't, so the problem was not a surprise for me. For me, the diagnosis is a hardware problem with a bad modem.

I had this trouble. Pulled the negative post off the 12v battery for 90 seconds and it activated after the reboot.
I can vouch for this. At the advice from someone in another thread on this subject, I did the same and everything started working. What's sad is that the dealer's mechanics followed some procedure sounded like they had to disassemble the center console, part of the dash, remove the rear seat, remove seat belt and whatever is behind the rear seat so they could test some wires, determine that I had a bad TCU module, and order a $1300 part that is backordered for about a month. All that hassle and the could have just disconnected the computer from power to reboot it and gotten things working for me.

The guy who got me to try this despite the dealer's diagnosis told me that he lost his connection a second time and had to disconnect the battery again too get it working. So, there may be a hardware problem that will need to be fixed eventually or maybe it's just a software fix, but for now something that took a minute and cost Ford $0 has me up and running.

I think Ford needs to tell its dealers to just disconnect & reconnect the 12V battery when they see this problem while Ford looks for a permanent fix.

That’s nuts! I called the Ford Connect line and the woman explained they had an OTA update go out that froze the modems and they were working on an update to unfreeze them. I just got to thinking “I wonder how to make that modem reboot…” then had to figure out how to stop powering something sitting on a HUGE battery. Did some reading and realized we also have a 12v battery that powers the regular car stuff. It was certainly worth a try and super easy.
