Does anyone know if Lightning's 12V LVB is code protected in software? When I had my troublesome ID.4FE, the 12V battery got most of the blame, but could not be replaced, except by authorized service department because it was registered in the modules. Of course, the correct battery was not available through VW because of supply chain disruption.

What are the problems with the 12v system? 1 problem I have heard is the lead acid battery only last 1 or 2 years before being replaced. I have seen threads on here about not getting OTA because of low battery not sure if thge lithium battery will help with that or not but it does have a 10 year warranty. Also it has an app on your phone so you will know if it needs charging.

A bad battery would be replaced under warranty if it failed in "1 or 2 years." Things break, that's what the warranty is for.

The instances I've seen of low battery voltage seem to be attributable to other causes; the big battery not charging the little battery because something isn't working right. If the big battery isn't charging the lead-acid battery it won't charge a lithium battery. Things break, that's what the warranty is for.

Keep in mind that people don't post on the internet how perfectly normal their vehicle is behaving. I'm guessing 12V battery issues are pretty rare. Personally, I'd roll with the battery that is covered under warranty rather than spend $250.

One thing I find interesting with the Lightning is "accessory mode" which activates when you press the start button but don't press the brake pedal while doing so. Is accessory mode run off the 12V battery only? I killed my wife's car's battery when we first got it because I had it in accessory mode while I was learning about the features. Could you do the same thing in a Lightning?

Lithium would be very expensive (overkill?) - what about an AGM battery. ICE vehicles have an alternator charging the battery. Its not entirely clear what (if anything) is charging the 12V in the Lightning which seems to be perpetually low, esp for those of us in cold weather climates and inteferes (prevents) downloads and updates to the software.

I started out using AGM batteries in my solar system they don't last long so I now use Lithium and it works fine with 10 year warranty in the long run lithium is cheaper. Lithium in cold areas below freezing without some kind of heater will not work. I think the lead acid battery has a 1 year warranty I could wrong about that.

I think the problem with lead acids is that they weren’t designed for the modern car. It’s great for the initial crank power needed to start the engine. Then gets charged back to full during the drive without much drawing from them.

I remember before smart cars lead acids didn’t go bad unless you left your lights on too many times. They easily lasted 5 years. With my recent hybrids and BEV, they all died at the three year mark. The 12v is being used/taxed while the car is “off”.

The question I have is, when is the truck charging the 12v? Hopefully it’s topping it off while charging the big lithium battery. If it’s not I totally see it failing early.

My 2 cents on 12v , We love our electric Ford Focus, my wife loves its not like driving a space ship and its quick.I like not having to do anything nor lifting the hood. The reason I signed up for the Lightning. When the focus was 3 years old in the parking lot of a Walmart at 10 degrees ambien, the car did not start when pushing the button. Well I went went back into Walmart bought a battery and a 10 mm wrench, burrrr …charged out the battery ( after looking for it) And back to 100% relaiaibillity, not a big issue

These are pricey, but have an 11 year warranty. They are also self-heating so that they can charge below freezing. Heater should turn off when fully charged. Only worry would be that it would constantly be "charging" if it is hooked up to the vehicles battery system?
