When I lock the truck, I notice that the rear ambient light (behind the center console that shines on the lower plugs and rear seat heaters) stays on. I can't tell for how long it stays one, but when I come back after five minutes or so, it is still on. Does anyone know why it does this?

Retained power settings vary depending on vehicle, but a 20 minute timer is not unusual.

Yeah, I will test it (and report back) to see how long it stays on. I am curious as to why this is even a feature?

The "Retained power" feature has been around for a while. It keeps things like the lighter sockets and interior lights powered for a period of time after the vehicle is shut down, then kills all accessory power from a central relay.

A major reason that most, if not all OEMs went to this design is because it helped solve a growing parasitic draw issue many vehicles started having in the 80s & early 90s as tech in vehicles started to become more complex. Relying on each component to properly shut down turned out to be overly optimistic, and many vehicles of that vintage developed the dreaded drawdown problems that were costly and work-intensive to track down.

The new system assures that if there is a draw problem, there is one central relay to inspect or replace.

So, basically there is one main shutoff at 5-15 minutes that makes sure everything is off? That makes sense.

This just happened to me, too - only, the light that stayed on was the one over the driver side rear door. Seems a bit random!
That is weird. I guess I should be happy it's only the rear light in the middle, so it looks like it does that on purpose?
