Would you spend $8,000 on a supercharger at home?

As a tinker and member of IEEE, I have been trying to build a Tesla-like supercharger at home.

Trying to cut the charging time from 10 hours to 5 hours!

It's a level 3 (L3) DC fast charger (DCFC), using regular 240V power to my house.

I have a 200 Amp electric panel. Added a 100A breaker dedicated to this DCFC charger. Designed at 21KW.

That's the best I can try at home before I upgrade my panel to 400A.

Call me stupid or not - but I spend $8,000 on the parts so far. It starts working!

Note that this charger is completely different from the 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro. It is DC! So, it is fast.

I designed a rectifying module at 20KW to replace the onboard Ford charger (standard range) that bottlenecked at 40A using AC.

Wondering if anybody has also built the same at home!

Congrats - this is definitely what you call a hobby.

I don't know that 21 kW is going to be enough of a difference from 19.2 for those of us with an ER battery to make it worthwhile, but certainly an interesting project, I hope you keep us all posted on your progress. Also, you probably need to feed from a 125A breaker, as you would be drawing close to 90 amps with this running.

Are you sure this won't void your warranty?
